Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

how often do you guys upgrade the bigger parts of your setup? more importantly the mobo and cpu im still rocking a b350-f and just saw that theyre now on b550 and im like damn......if i wanted to upgrade the cpu from say 1700x to a, say 3600x, id have to upgrade to a newer mobo right?
GPU maybe 2-3 and mobo/cpu 4-5.

I hear you can expect rtx 30x0 showing up in very small quantities between dec 15 to dec 17. One vendor already Nvidia contacted them expects to see around 30 Nvidia rtx 3080's around that time they where told. They are the biggest retailer in Germany so not many cards.

On the list of ways that I feel dumb, I forgot I bought my PC through NewEgg years ago. I fucking found it on my orders today when I went to order a monitor.

Here it is in all it's glorious outdated me being a dumbass specs:
https://www.newegg.com/ibuypower-ne900h/p/N82E16883227688?Item=N82E16883227688

Intel Cor i7 6th Gen 6700k
8 gb DDR4
1 TB mechanical HD
120 GB SSD (that is being replaced with a 500 gb SSD right now)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB GDDR5

What if I wanted like 1080p and minimum 60 FPS should I fiddle with next after RAM sticks and replacing the stock air fan.

So you have a GTX 1070 instead of an RX 580? That’s great.
And they really did use a stock Intel cooler on an unlocked i7! Fuck IBP.

Yeah, it's a tad bizarre.

Looks like all I will need to upgrade is the RAM and just get a simple pair of 8 gb sticks.

Yeah I was still staying at or above 60 FPS at 1080p and high settings in newer games. It might be the GOAT video card.

@Gregolian You’re lucky right now because RAM is cheap. There was a shortage a couple of years ago where a 4 GB stick of 2400 was over $40.

Oh I have realized when i was browsing prices and talking to friends that have been gaming on PC longer than me.

One guy:
"DUDE, all you need is RAM and an Air Cooler and you're good to go... I hate you so much"
"Why?"
"It's like $100 or less to do that right now and you could STILL get a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 if you wanted... when I did it 3 years ago it was like $150. You being a lazy fuck paid off."

I need something explained though:
https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?d=NVIDIA+GeForce+GTX+1070+8+GB+GDDR5&N=50001312

I looked up the card for shits'n'giggles and went under the MSI branding because I know that's what I have... why is there like 40 different versions of the same card?

We have almost the same system except I have the i5 7600k and 16 gb. I think you'll appreciate the extra ram. It's worth the upgrade.

And yeah the 1070 is great. It's probably still good enough for 1080p60 on new games but I'm thinking about building a new system with the 3070 or maybe the 3060ti is better value. My timing with the cpu and gpu markets couldn't be any better though so I'm tempted to just scrap the idea for another year or two.

I really want to experience Cyberpunk on my PC the more I go down the rabbithole but I think what I will do in order to do that is:
1.) Sadly wait until CD Projekt Red releases some of the inevitable DLC this game will have

2.) Maybe build a new system on a new mobo with a upgraded GPU and at least 4 slots for RAM. If I could I'd reuse my CPU at least for a little bit and fucking pray that it doesn't melt trying to run Cyberpunk.

EDIT:
Just looked up the Cyberpunk minimum requirements and other than RAM my PC could handle it.... on like the lowest possible settings which feels like it'd be giving the game a disservice.

I know exactly what you're saying. I'd probably say go for the upgrade if Cyberpunk is your most hyped game over the next few years. Get the most out of it.

It's where I am leaning. All I really play now even on my Xbox is like Destiny 2 (several years old) and Siege (well over 5 years old) so my current system as is could likely run both virtually on as high of settings as possible as long as I have enough RAM.

That's where I'm at as well. I'm running an ancient PC (7 years old) that I put a 1070 in as a bandaid a few years ago. My 12gb of RAM and 3820 are still going strong all this time later, but Cyberpunk has me seriously considering finally scrapping it and putting together a new rig. I wish I had been getting parts when good deals popped up over the course of the past year.

I think if I had tried to get into this last winter I'd be in a better spot to run Cyberpunk on that PC. Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait a bit.

Granted, CDPR is good with their releases and you quite often can get the base game and a ton of DLC for good deals once the game has been out for a bit. I could just go get Witcher 3 and finally fucking play it on PC the way it was meant to be played instead of on an Xbox controller (it sucks to play with a controller HOLY FUCK).

I've actually been considering reinstalling TW3 to finish all the monster contracts. I still have at least 20 side quests that I've never done.

I actually prefer the combat with a controller, though. I play it with an xbox controller on PC.

I got soured on the game early on on Xbox. Found a merchant on the side of the road "attacked by bandits" (was attacked by monsters) and was in a loading screen when my damn controller started vibrating and I heard Geralt getting attacked then when the loading screen was done it said I failed the mission.

Lol that sucks. Hopefully you give it another shot, because it's a masterpiece

Gotta ask, when looking at motherboards and shit... barring the inevitable AMD vs Intel fight (which I am sure will now create mud slinging in 3... 2.... 1....) is there very many differences between companis like say ASRock, ASUS and others barring asthetics? I know chipsets sort of matter but past that they all seem to do the same thing and I can't imagine there's a ton of difference among them.

looks like im due to upgrade my rx580 soon then. i could hold onto my 1700x/b350-f for atleast 2 more years by this logic
It's general, of course, but I feel like it's a pretty good rule of thumb. Part of me wants to jump ship early this time around because of PCIE gen 4 and ddr 5, but then I just remind myself that waiting a bit means I'll avoid some of the kinks that come with early adoption.
