Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

Gamer meld claims 10's of thousands of GPU's and CPU's will be available to vendors soon and we should see products on shelves by 12/14/20. They I hear said chip producers are rushing to get ahead COVID shipments impact. Because already they are seeing problems and soon airline shipping going to be shifted to high gear for months moving huge quantities of vaccine across the world.

End of the year roundups for Cases, though perhaps a bit premature, are out for 2020.

is there a cpu shortage bc i just took a look to see what the 1700x was going for and its boggling that amazon and newegg have it around $300+

Yeah, I'd noticed this too this past week. I think we just entered that weird limbo phase where most stock from the previous generations is running dry because all energy has been thrust into meeting the demand for the new processors. It's the best value CPUs that are the skinniest: those classically in the $100-$200 range. Right now the best value is the Ryzen 5 1600 AF aka Ryzen 5 1600 (12nm) for $149 via Amazon. This is just an R5-2600 with -100MHz clocks.

The upside has been alien-feeling sales on Intel's i7 and i9 CPUs. They've finally been forced to price humbly. This week there was a sale on the i7-10700KF for $289, an i9-10850K for $389, and an i9-9900K + MSI Z390 Gaming Plus ATX MoBo for $409.

There was a sale on the R5-3600 for $169 earlier this week, but it sold out 2min before the Redditor could even post it to the sales sub.

wow. thats kind of crazy. i guess 1700x is still in a good price range secondhand on ebay.

on an unrelated note, after 2 years ive finally OC my 1700x in the bios. i just wish i could put my 16gb ram in my system. but thats just a 19 days away

My MC got 25+ 3600s in stock but it's back up to $200 (was $180 before).

Reporting in on my new build. The jump from 2600x to 5800x is massive. WIthout upgrading my GPU, games are insanely more smooth. I didnt realize the 2000 zen series were showing their age this badly.

I think hardware in general is on limits right now. Been looking at RAM sticks and seeing everywhere:
"Limit 2 per customer"

how often do you guys upgrade the bigger parts of your setup? more importantly the mobo and cpu im still rocking a b350-f and just saw that theyre now on b550 and im like damn......if i wanted to upgrade the cpu from say 1700x to a, say 3600x, id have to upgrade to a newer mobo right?

no, the 3600 can run on that.

you should update the bios with the 1700x first, though.

When my computer no longer does the things I want it too. B350 & 3600x is compatible.

You could upgrade to a Zen 2 CPU like the 3700X, but you could not upgrade to a Zen 3 CPU (ex. 5600X, 5800X).
https://rog.asus.com/us/motherboards/rog-strix/rog-strix-b350-f-gaming-model/helpdesk_cpu/

The B550 chipset will support those Zen 3 CPUs, but it won't support Zen 3's successor. The X570 motherboards will.
