Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

Based on MSRP, arguably, though I personally felt the R5-3600 was worth the premium over the i5-9400F, especially when you factored in the "motherboard tax" that used to exist with Intel. When considering actual prices, there were stretches where the R5-2600 and R5-1600AF blew out the other sub-$150 options.
Yeah I made sure to wait for the cheaper B360/H370 mobos before I got my 8400.

So, my mouse is starting to mis-click. I’ll right click to ADS and it’ll ADS but then start flashing between hip fire and ADS like I’m tapping it (I’m not). It’s both left and mouse buttons (Destiny 2 has multiple weapons that you have to charge shoot and I can HEAR those start charging then stop).

Anyone have a suggestion? I play mostly FPS games and some simple point and click things like Civ and other RTS games so I don’t need an MMO mouse with 900 buttons but would like more than just the left/right, scroll wheel, and DPI adjuster.

Wireless would be nice but not required.

Do you like heavy mice?

Mice are very subjective. Everyone has a different hand size, grip type, weight preference, etc. Go to rocketjumpninja, follow their guide on how to measure your hand, and input the info.

Hoping someone can give ma some advice on a new Motherboard/CPU for my PC.

I just got a EVGA RTX 3060 and want to upgrade my motherboard and CPU since it bottlenecks with what I currently have

I currently use the G305....its damn amazing and the BF sale for it now makes it even way cheaper. Its back heavy and you'll need to mod it using AAA lithium battery to make it light. I have mid size hands and like to fingertip grip and works fantastic for me.

The Logitech G Pro wireless is having an amazing deal, and is the same sale price I bought the above mouse for a few years ago. Id recommend that if you got a little more to spend.

Whats your budget?

Use something like PCPartPicker to help you with your build, they got some great builds there aswell. Have a look at other people's builds and see what they used for their card, and if it suits ya needs [and fits with your budget]

The Alder Lake 12600K is definitely the way to go. A motherboard that supports DDR5 RAM is heavily preferable, but only if you can find DDR5 RAM to buy (DDR4 RAM won't work in those slots). And even then it might not be cost effective at this point. You could also opt to get a DDR4 board for Alder Lake if you don't want to buy new RAM. If you bought your RAM recently, if it's like 3600+, then you won't lose much of anything in games, right now, as benchmarks showed, but you would gimp your ability to upgrade the RAM down the road (but most don't seem to do that).

If you don't want to spend $300 on a CPU the i5-11400 is the way to go. I'd get the Z590 Gigabyte Aorus Elite AX with that since it's just $170 right now. That's a steal right now.

I noticed Ibuypower has an i5-12600KF "upgrade kit" for the $699.
Intel Core i5-12600KF - preinstalled
ASUS PRIME Z690-P DDR4
16GB (8GB x 2) DDR4-3600MHz TEAMGROUP T-FORCE DELTA RGB
1TB WD Blue SN550 3D PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive (Pre-installed)

I did a quick google search for prices for the individual parts listed and it came to $650. So you're paying them $49 to install the CPU which isn't terrible compared to Microcenter charging $80 to install a cpu and mount the heatsink.

So, I built a PC a couple of years ago for my dad with this mobo: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B250M-PRO-VD/Specification
I know it has a M2 slot but I don't know if it's SATA or NVMe. He wants to buy this NVMe SSD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XHMBQK3?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1
I'm ashamed that I don't know if it'll work on that mobo or not. PCPartPicker says yes but others on r/PCMasterRace and Tom's Hardware are saying no (can't use NVMe M2 in a SATA M2 and vice versa). What say you, Sherdog?

Edit: I think PCPP is lying.

I don't know what the hell those guys are Tom's Hardware and PCMR are talking about. It clearly notes in the motherboard manual:
Intel® B250 Chipset
  • 6x SATA 6Gb/s ports
  • 1x M.2 slot (Key M)*
    • Supports up to PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6Gb/s
    • Supports 2242/ 2260/ 2280 storage devices
    • Intel® OptaneTM Memory Ready
    • Support PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe U.2 SSD with Turbo U.2 Host card**
* The SATA2 port will be unavailable when an M.2 SATA SSD
module has been installed in the M.2 slot.
** The Turbo U.2 Host Card is not included, please purchase
separately.
The SATA2 being disabled if the m.2 slot is populated has nothing to do with NVMe support.

Yes, that SSD will work in the motherboard. If he has a SATA drive plugged into the SATA2 port, just move it to another available port.

Thanks. I figured you'd have the real deal answer.
Current storage is a WD Blue 7200RPM HDD and it's painfully slow for W10.

ok sherbros.
i am of the lucky RNGesus race this yr.
snagged both the next gens and a decent gaming laptop.
the laptop pushing much higher frame rates has me shopping for a gaming monitor for black friday. to get max performance/quality out of the consoles

torn between the samsung odyssey g70a (the 4k version) at a comfy 28 inches (decent deal for BF at best buy) flat panel
and a few monitors in the QHD department (random black friday deals) most are curved
the qhd's are a bit bigger, have better frame rates that the xbox/ps5 wont ever reach. but the ps5 is either 1080 or 4k 1440 not supported from my digging.

they are currently hooked up to a giant flat panel 4k 60fps but the 17 inch laptop at higher fps kinda killed that experience

any of you nerds got any suggestions? will i even notice a difference in 2k/4k on a 28-34 inch monitor at 120+ frames per second?
the ps5 is for a few exclusives that are not even out yet. so the main driver will be the xbox and the future desktop build.
so the monitor also has the pc in mind down the road too.

cheers shernerds
happy holidays

Let me tell you. I was a mac guy for years.

even worked at Apple as a UX Designer.

I'm now a PC guy.

I'm even surprisingly preferring Windows 11 > MacOS Big Sur, UX-wise
The OS where you can't customize icons in the Start Menu at all?

The OS where you can't create a shortcut to the Bluetooth Settings toggle, for example, to turn it on and off?

The OS where you have zero control over the original naming of the User Folder with a clean install, and where modifying that user folder name to, let's say, you're first fucking name, only possible by tediously employing a second admin account, then instituting a registry modification, results in a all sorts of broken OS-level handshakes like the inability to pin anything to the taskbar?

Windows 11 is a heaping pile of shit. If I could game on Mac or Linux I would gladly switch today.

@Madmick Should DRAMless SSDs still be avoided as boot drives in 2021? Even NVMe with HMB?
