Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

Just bought a Raspberry Pi 4 with the hopes of making it a retro gaming console. Any advice? I know next to nothing about computers so it should be a good learning experience for me as well.

The Pi 4 can run hot so get a case with a fan, or at least get some heatsinks. You can 3d print a case if you have one or know someone who does.
Make sure to get a Class 10 micro SD card, something like this. If you want the best of the best card, @Madmick would be the guy to ask.
The easiest way to get games up and running is to find a premade image that will install the OS, emulator, and games. I don't know how much farther we can talk about it without breaking the rules.
There's lot of USB Retro controllers for each system on places like Amazon and ebay, but a lot of them are junk. The PI has Bluetooth so you can use your Xbox or PlayStation controller. 8Bitdo makes some good controllers, but they're kind of spendy.

I got the case covered. Also got two SNES controllers but if they suck I'll just use my PS4 controllers.

As far as SD cards I got this

https://www.amazon.com/Retropie-128GB-110-Games-Raspberry/dp/B084VH6KX1

Preloaded with games. It was kind of an impulse buy but it got good reviews

I live right next to a Micro Center so what do I know.

hurr durr.

these just came out like 2 weeks ago. https://www.microcenter.com/product...-xt-dual-fan-12gb-gddr6-pcie-40-graphics-card

weird that they sold for retail, amirite? i mean, you just said that they mark everything up and don't even sell open box at msrp, but these had "25+" and sold out in like an hour... at, you know, msrp.

these are some of the dumbest lies to ever tell. especially after i posted the 5800x selling for less than msrp...

Those 6700 xt's did not go for $479.99. I watched them drop. You keep posting stuff that's sold out of and are taking it as price they actually sold for. I believe they were like $850 and they all sold out the day they were released. I don't give a fuck if you believe me because that is what I saw and people here know what you are like.

those 6700XT's 100% went for $479.99

unlike the CPUs, the GPUs are unicorns.

ok. that is what you think. you are entitled to think that way if you want.

An arcade stick is nice to have if you're going to play arcade games. You can use Xbox 360 or PS3 on the PI, which you can usually pick up at a decent price used.

Don't be afraid to pick up another SD card and play around with it. You can install a desktop OS, try Kodi which is a media player, use it as a Minecraft server, try Steam Link to play games on your Pi from your main gaming PC, try out Pi-Hole, etc. There's so much cool stuff you can do with a Pi. If you're playing around with something and you screw it up, just format the SD card and start again.

please show proof of mc selling 5900Xs for more than msrp.

i've read plenty bitching about unobtanium, but i've never even heard of anyone claiming that mc was selling amd 5000 cpus for more than msrp. closest to this that i recall was just their silly listings, ie:
"$799.99SAVE $250.00
$549.99"

You can get Mad Catz joysticks and pop in actual arcade parts. I have an actual SF IV TE stick they released with all arcade components. The difference with it and the cheaper ones that you can swap parts is mostly weight.

There were many different variations of the 6700xt that had a manufacturer price anywhere from 480-880 from what I saw at Microcenter when I checked on them at launch. Different board partners had different prices.

I'm not proving your point. You don't understand the pricing of graphics card at retail prices. The 6700XT for example has a MSRP suggestion of 479$. That's for the AMD version of the card. They have board partners, ASUS, XFX, Sapphire, Gigabyte, MSI etc that makes cards for them. Each of these manufacturers takes a raw design from AMD, then add on components to the board, depending on what components they add on to the board, the price their MSRP would go up. 4

^Like this card, this is the price on Asus website from a google cache. These are the actual prices of the cards, microcenter isn't marking cards up because of a shortage.

If you want to be technical douche, TSMC designs the GPU. Then AMD designs a card around it.

By "techsplaining" how a gpu is made is to @Prefect.
I wasn't getting technical....i gave the version that would be equivalent to say base model price of a car, and adding options to it at a dealer, and the dealer price being higher than what the base model's MSRP would be.

It looks like Nvidia may never make a 3080Ti instead just focus on selling the higher priced "bigger margins" 3090 cards. They moved the new chip slated for the 3080ti into the 3090 now. Apparently it's a direct replacement an could run cooler.
"
The latest development in the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti saga has suggested that, rather than being delayed to mid-May, the graphics card may have simply been scrapped — or at the very least, recycled.

As reported by Neowin, Hardwareluxx forum user isoO recently disassembled his Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Founders Edition to find its original die marker — GA102-250 — crossed out and replaced by another, GA102-300. GA102-250 was heavily rumored to be the chip powering the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, indicating that Nvidia is repurposing the chips to produce RTX 3090 GPUs instead."

Without question this is a result of the development of cryptocurrencies mining demands.

You kinda proved your own point because there's cards in that list as high as $830.

Do you have an actual link from Microcenter listing a 6800 card at $880? If not then you might have misremembered or maybe the price included the tax.

But yeah there are different version for 6800 cards at higher MSRP out there.
