Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

Well Linus Torvalds has step into the CPU war somewhat by saying he prefers Intel's honesty over a design that has been a part of Intel chips since 80286 and is heavily reworking it to resolve a nearly 3 decade old design. Apparently AMD shares this dated design in their chips and has to due with a performance hit the general purpose registers in the CPU by not efficiently buffering the individual registers data. So it would improve the processors interrupts and make better use of the register sets and reduce latency.

"
AMD was the first to come out with its proposed changes in February 2021: AMD Supervisor Entry Extensions. Intel followed in March with its flexible return and event delivery (FRED) design. What sparked Torvald's interest was when someone on the Real World Technologies deep technology conversation forum introduced the topic with the note: "x86 - why unite when you can fragment?"

Torvalds, however, doesn't see it that way. He wrote:

Honestly, it doesn't look too bad.

The AMD version is essentially "Fix known bugs in the exception handling definition."

The Intel version is basically "Yeah, the protected mode 80286 exception handling was bad, then 386 made it odder with the 32-bit extensions, and then syscall/sysenter made everything worse, and then the x86-64 extensions introduced even more problems. So let's add a mode bit where all the crap goes away."

In contrast, the AMD one is basically a minimal effort to fix actual fundamental problems with all that legacy-induced crap that is nasty to work around and that has caused issues.

So, what are these problems? They are hidden with the x86's architecture's Interrupt Descriptor Table (IDT). This is a data structure that implements an interrupt vector table. It comes, unfortunately, with numerous exception problems.

These, according to Torvalds, include:

  • IDT itself is a horrible nasty format and you shouldn't have to parse memory in odd ways to handle exceptions. It was fundamentally bad from the 80286 beginnings, it got a tiny bit harder to parse for 32-bit, and it arguably got much worse in x86-64.
  • The %rsp general-purpose register is not being restored properly by return-to-user mode.
  • Delayed debug traps into supervisor mode.
  • Several bad exception nesting problems: Non-Maskable Interrupts (NMI), machine checks, and STI-shadow handling at the very least).
  • Various atomicity problems with gsbase (swapgs) and stack pointer switching
  • Several different exception stack layouts, and literally hundreds of different entry points for exceptions, interrupts and system calls (and that's not even counting the call gates that nobody should use in the first place).
Torvalds concluded: "But I suspect I forgot some." In short, it's a mess and it's been getting messier for some time.

"

Linus is the man he is not a fan of how AMD seeks to resolve this issue vs Intel.

Intel may release a ton of new information about their new GPU by end of the month. It could potentially be released on a 10nm process that could be manufactured in an Intel factory instead of TMSC.

Could insure a good size number of chips that is not constrained by issues at TMSC. Early benchmarks puts it performance wise between the 3060 an 3070 an ray tracing at around 3070 level running emulation. Emulation would allow you to run Nvidia optimized games on it without a huge performance hit.

EK released a non RGB version of their new AIO. 240mm is $90 & the 360mm is $120.

Is $2k the new price point for 3080s now? Ebay is filled with them. How long will this last? Probably indefinitely now that there is an absurd market for computer hardware.

Most people now believe that Nvidia trying to figure out new much higher price points for 30 series cards. Mostly due to the insane growth of cryptocurrencies and AI applications.

Nvidia basically telling games good luck. This is not going to cool off till the major cryptocurrencies become unminable out of reach of RTX level cards not till 2023.

Still waiting on my 3080 and 5900 cpu since 26th of november :(

?????

5900Xs have been in stock like 1000 times at seemingly most places. not as common as 5600x/5800x, but you should have been able to get one pretty easily since november...

@Gregolian - quoting you here because madmick actually just banned me from the PC build thread.

i don't think MC ships. they do offer bundle deals (generally $20 off) when you buy a cpu+mobo. ie: the 5800x i've been eyeing would be $410 (vs 450 msrp) if i picked up a mobo. of course, i wish i bought a GPU back in november... without a new gpu, it does me little good.
If MC was as prolific as a big box store like Best Buy I think it'd be a great barometer of stock/benchmark for pricing. But they aren't.... which might be why they have such good prices and stock.

For most of us though, we have to rely on NewEgg or Amazon or (*shudders*) Best Buy for our parts. Or second hand used market which is just.... not swell.

sure, except that amd just sold them on their website last week.

and bestbuy/etc get them in somewhat regularly.
I tbf always forget to check the manufacturer websites.

BB always gets stuff but their pricing is... woof

Last time I was in a BB I was in their parts section and yeah you can find parts but youre always paying a bit more than elsewhere and then still have sales tax (where I live at least).

I'm lucky though. Computer repair shop near me builds custom PCs and has a very VERY small selection of parts that I think if I go to upgrade my current system or build a newer one I'll buy from them. They helped me swap out my SSD and shit basically at the cost of the SSD.

So weird how there's only 1 in all of Cali yet 2 in north Georgia.

Good grief wtf?

There isn't even one in WA I don't think.... you know, home of Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Nintendo America.

Microsoft fight simulator went in reverse with the latest update. No doubt the scenery improved and new photogrammetry been added but also a new performance hit. Pretty sizable one on some levels.

I have decent computing but now could say a 3080 could be a recommended spec. I have no idea why they did that now when a 3080 costs so much. You could get by with a 2070 super but expect jitters in playback with low frame rates.

Previously improvements came with performance improvements not this time it seems.

Oh it's also a 30 gig download.
