It didnt used to be like this. Infighting and clinch work used to be great in boxing decades ago but now its only a few fighters that still have good craft there. Its died out pathetically in boxing and a big reason why boxing has gotten weaker and peaked decades ago. Even for HW we used to have monster clinch infighters like Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe.

Fury is one of the best now and he was CLUELESS at Francis basic clinchwork. Fury in fights can lie on opponents like he did against Wilder to stall out rounds and rest. He had no chance to do it against Francis b/c of his size and clinch ability. Francis isnt even the best HW right now in MMA in the clinch either.

Contemporary era boxing and kickboxing have horrible clinch and infighting. Muay thai and MMA are FAAAR ahead of both in the 2020s and the pinnacle of clinch and infighting and Francis showed that.

Refs are quick to break clinches in boxing nowadays which results in boxers not training their clinchwork and inside fighting as much. It's the opposite in MMA. Fury is able to beat up most guys on the inside but they're always either smaller and/or have no inside game to speak of (ieg., Wilder, Wallin, etc).

The clinch has gone through an evolution of being the most important aspect of the sport, where most damage was inflicted (in the bare knuckle era), to being basically nonexistent as far as importance. If you go back and look at a guy like Jack Johnson, most of his work was done in the clinch with uppercuts.

In fact, Tyson Fury has probably been the best heavyweight on the inside for a while. But he still has nothing on an experienced MMA fighter. MMA standup often resembles old time boxing more than modern boxing does. The gloves are of a similar size to what fighters used back in the day, and the referees let the fighters work in the clinch.

It severely inflated Furys clinch and infighting ability to a lot of dumbasses who said hed beat previous and actual ATG HWs. They were talking about his clinchwork and infighting like he was prime Riddick Bowe or Lennox Lewis but reality just set in. Hes not him.

Anyone here watched the Triad Combat event? Hade Mike Perry vs Mike Seals, Pulev vs Mir, and other Boxing/MMA fights with modified boxing rules.

It really seemed like the boxers had no idea what to do whenever the MMA guys clinched with them.

True but the boxers in that event weren't worth a shit. I hadn't even heard of most of them. Did you see Mayweather vs McGregor? Floyd was able to bully McGregor in the clinch despite being the much smaller man. It depends on the fighter, really. Beterbiev is strong as hell inside the clinch and has a nasty inside game. He also wrestled when he was younger. Crawford too. He wrestled when he was a youth.

I noticed the jiu jitsu frames too when I saw the fight live.

It took away a huge part of Fury's game - clinch and create an angle for a big shot - vs Wilder, Cunningham, etc
