Forrest Griffin is criminally underrated

No, Shogun was not at the top of his game. He fought injured (had ACL surgery after the fight) and gassed inside 2 rounds (Shogun was known for having great cardio).

When Shogun was in better shape this happened:

He was 12-1 in his last 13 fights before his UFC debut, only losing by breaking his arm against Coleman, which isn't really a loss.

In his next 4 fights he knocked out Coleman and Chuck then lost a decision that most people thought he won, got his rematch and took the belt from Machida, who was undefeated at that time.

He was at the top of his game, dude.

He could have been 100-0. That's irrelevant to his shape fight night.

Shogun fought injured (fact). He had an ACL surgery right after the fight. He couldn't train cardio properly during training camp, which is why he gassed so quickly. Look at his fight vs. Machida, 5 rounds and he was still going strong. Or his fight vs. Little Nog, which was a war. Shogun wasn't a fighter who gassed in 2 rounds.

Anyone who claims Shogun was at the top of his game that night is being ignorant. Yeah, he was decorated, he was top ranked and was in a great streak, but he was far from being at his top shape. It was a good win for a journeyman like Forrest. But the rematch proved how superior Shogun actually was.

No.

About 95% of Forrest's career consisted in gatekeeping. He was never among the best in the division except for a very brief period of time. He was basicly only relevant in 3 fights: against Shogun, who was making his UFC debut and fought injured, against Rampage (very close fight) and against Rashad, who destroyed him.

Then he got destroyed by Anderson Silva (expected) and was never close to being a contender again. Fought Tito for the umpteenth time, got destroyed by Shogun in the rematch, beat an old Franklin and then reitred.

If anything Forrest is overrated around here because people pretend he was an elite fighter. He wasn't. He was a mid tier fighter who managed to get a couple of good wins. Elite fighters are time proven and for the large majority of his career, Forrest wasn't one of the best, nor even close to it.

He's basicly a one hit wonder.
Can discredit all you want but he was rightfully #1 in a deep weight class even if for a limited time.

So was Serra.
So was Bisping.

Yeah, they were rightful champions, but anyone who thinks they were really the best are kidding themselves.

I love how fight fans talk about perennial top 10 contenders with bullshit terms like "journeyman".

In any other sport or walk of life, you're elite if you're top 10. In the fight game, half the fans think you're a bum unless you're an active champ or on the cusp of a title shot. Fucking clowns, that half.

No word of a lie. There was a very brief point in time during the Fedor era where this chinny fruitcake was rated as the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world according to UFC rankings lol. Same bullshit as Ronda basically with Rogan crying etc

Was a fan of forrest on the ultimate fighter and most of his career. But he turned into an arrogant asshole post fighting career. Can't stand his 'im so awesome and funny' personality now.

wtf was that ref doing? I realize it's slowed down but damn those are 4 completely unnecessary hits

and that's the second time it happened to Forrest

no wonder he retired at 33

Submits prime Shogun
<Lmaoo><Lmaoo><Lmaoo>

You realize Shogun was nearly one legged for the fight. He battled very serious knee problems and couldnt even train ground fighting and only limited cardio training. That was the worst version of Shogun.

There is a slight reason why he underwent knee surgery (again) after the Forrest fight and looked completely different against Machida...etc. I like an overachiever like Forrest but stay realistic.

Its still a win for Forrest and Shogun really only has himself to blame as he went full Cain Velasquez in his knee rehabs in Brazil before the bout. But Shogun would not cancel a fight. Thats just his style.

he's that guy who was good everywhere, but not great in any one area (apart from, say, cardio). additionally, he had no KO power and a weak chin. i would say he had a great career, but i don't think he's particularly underrated. he didn't even defend the belt once successfully, but has some impressive wins and did a lot for the sport. plus he was good humored and so forth.

shogun was in really bad shape when forrest beat him, but other than that, griffin was a solid fighter that achieved far more than you'd expect from him.

I’ll never forget him humiliating a prime shogun and shutting the Pride fanatics up for months. Was almost as satisfying as CC getting his head kicked off by Gonzaga. Almost.

Underrated by some but overrated by others in terms of actual quality.

The reality I'd say is that he was a good LHW but not one of the greats who pulled off a couple of upsets based on injury and style plus of course getting the opportunities in the first place.

He was not the lion hearted champ the UFC sold him as, hard worker yes but not the strongest mentally as he went down easy several times and folded before he even got to the cage before Anderson.

He held the title as long as Shogun did, and only needed one title shot to capture it.

Weird.

Fighting injured is part of the game, nobody is 100% when they enter the cage, and he was cleared to fight.

It was also his first fight in the UFC. Could be jitters, could be that it was his first fight off the juice? Who knows?

It seems as if you're making excuses for him? Look at where the man was in his career. It was literally the pinnacle for him.
