A former top Vatican official has accused Pope Francis of having known of allegations of sex abuse by a prominent U.S. cardinal for years and called on him to resign, in an unprecedented broadside against the pope by a church insider.

In a detailed 11-page bombshell statement given to conservative Roman Catholic media outlets during the Pope's visit to Ireland, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano accused a long list of current and past Vatican and U.S. church officials of covering up the case of Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who resigned in disgrace last month.

In remarkably blunt language, Vigano said alleged coverups in the church were making it look like "a conspiracy of silence not so dissimilar from the one that prevails in the mafia."

Can we just take a moment to appreciate just how fucked up this really is? There's an organization which has a proven record of systemic child sexual assault, from the lowest to the highest ranks, and the head of the organization knew about some of the allegations for years before they finally became public.

This is fucked up on an Alex-Jones-Lizard People-Pedophiles conspiracy level, only that it's 100% true, beyond any shadow of reasonable doubt.

Why isn't there an internationally sanctioned probe into the Catholic church which would force the Vatican to give full access to its historical records? Were this any other organization - like a business - this is exactly what would happen, while probably shutting down operations. These people belong in front of human rights tribunals, they're no better than a Milosevic or a Saddam.

The protections religions are afforded must end. They should be treated like any other organization, subject to the same scrutiny of laws that secular organizations are.

So, what good would that do? The Pope would just be replaced by another Pope. Is that going to solve the problem?
I think the Catholic Church needs to come up with some sort of 'reporting' system for the parishioners and an Inspector General (IG) type body to investigate sex abuse cases.

This is the dopest pope in the history of the Catholic Church, the guy asking for resignation can it a big fat dick

It’s why they have their own “country”. The last pope can’t leave or he’d be arrested, I’m sure he’s taught Francis a thing or two

The whole catholic church pedo factory should resign. I dare them to go 5 years without a massive pedo scandal that they will try to suppress.

Basically. The conservative wing of the Catholic Church loathes
Pope Francis and is trying to pin a problem that is decades— probably centuries— old on him.

Pure crap.

Pope Francis has been the most open Pope, by far. He has admitted the scale, depth, and scandal of the abuse, something no other Pope has even come close to doing.

The Church has failed miserably in not expelling these abusive priests much earlier, but it is simply false, statistically, that Catholic priests are more likely to abuse children than any other group of men.

Lol, that was my thought when I read the thread title.

But even still, something must be done about this problem. The Catholic Church is a notoriously difficult institution to reform and that seems to me to be by design. I think that's part of its strength too, its ability to hold on to its traditions and customs. But some traditions are sinister and need to go and unfortunately this pedo thing seems to be quite a deeply rooted, sinister tradition.

The Catholic Church policing themselves is why we have such problems.

How about they stop diddling little kids. This isn't a pope problem, it's a problem with the organization being sick and perverted in itself

Religion is a one big scam lol.

Need a new Inquisition to purge the pedo-heretics from the Church....by burning them

Coaches, doctors, Scout leaders, Uncles, parents, teachers, nursing home workers, prison guards, child pornographers, cops, pimps, Johns....

Unfortunately, sexual exploitation of young and vulnerable people— and often institutional cover-ups— is a society-wide problem.

The Church should be above this, and SHOULD be held to a higher standard, but this isn’t just a Church problem.

I dont think it's in the public's best interest to have kiddy diddlers assemble a staff to identify and punish kiddy diddlers, just my humble opinion

Read yesterday that the Vatican has roughly 600 citizens. Over 70 of them live overseas in diplomayic missions.

Plus, the Pope is legally a head of state.

On a dopeness scale of 1 - 10, how dope is it that he knew about some of the allegations before they were ever made public, and in response did nothing? For me, that's something like a -29.

So the pope that followed Benedict should resign too? Yeah that's not happening.

That's no bueno for sure but to what extent does the Pope have the power to change the Catholic Church as whole and especially on such an intractable problem as this? To an extent he should bear some responsibility as the head honcho but as @luckyshot said he has at least gone much further than his predecessors on this issue and for an institution like the Catholic Church that is slow to reform that counts for something.

The big reveal is still to come.

That they dont't get taken to the woodshed over these crimes because they're providing the kids for everybody else

Just because the problem is decades old doesn't absolve him necessarily, all the more reason he should have unearthed it- everyone knew.

The papacy always catches heat for pedo priests, this is business as usual.
