For those who met Ken Shamrock...

I saw Ken Shamrock at a grocery store in Miami once. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

god damn it, right as i was about to paste i saw you beat me lol

you claimed the public relationship wasnt healthy.

but yet Ken takes UFC to court and goes public bashing Dana and UFC.

you wanted Dana to sit quietly and take the high road ?

<Lmaoo>

yeah right
I did not imply Dana should take the high road at all. I merely challenged his communication style. If you don’t understand what I’m saying then I can’t control that so I’m not going to continue to bother.

Unless this is Dana White’s burner account?

How much is a shitty signature from ken shamrock worth these days?

lmao bro the fact that this man is a public figure, front facing high level executive in legitimate sports promotion/organization is absolutely hilarious. I ain't even mad at him either, plenty wish they can be so candid, but fighter relations and public relations from the UFC MUST change at some point lol this is not healthy at all.

I met him at autumn. The year was 1768. I asked him what is there to see around here? He drowned my baby boy in a bucket and rode off with my uncouncious wife. Maybe he just had a bad day. I don't know. I don't judge people.

As a TUF coach, the guy is a douche. He reasoned it out saying that he brought in coaches to train the guys which to me is BS.

As for interacting with fans, Ken's a solid dude.

I've only seen Ken Shamrock lose fights, first to Royce Gracie, then to Tito Ortiz, then again to Royce Gracie. Overall, I think his little brother was the more exciting fighter. Both are legends.

Met him at an autograph signing back when I was in high school at some drag races in the 90’s. He was still with the WWF at the time. He was wearing a track suit and had a gold chain. Seemed nice enough, but had an arrogance to him...

if any of you noobs actually watched season 3 of tuf, he always seemed incredibly arrogant throughout the entire series.

I mean the guy made his team watch clips of him fighting.
He was a terrible coach. He brought in a body builder as a strength and conditioning coach and a striking coach. Literally no BJJ coaches and Shamrock openly admitted to the team from day 1 that they will focus on shootboxing as that's what he trained his entire life.

Literally none of the coaches - including Shamrock - knew high level BJJ.

None of Shamrock's training for evaluation of the fighters involved actual MMA training. They were doing strongman shit like lifting bags if sand.

Fair enough if you want to destroy your back doing strongman training as your strength and conditioning, but to evaluate which fighters are the best in MMA?

It was beyond stupid. He was a pioneer and was one of the first high level MMA coaches in America, but he is a terrible coach.

how much of that is true regarding sambo? I mean as far as incorporating stand up fighting? If anyone can find any competition footage that includes striking pre 90s I would be interested. Not casting doubt on what you say, I'm just curious.

As an aside, I know U.S. troops during WW2 had h2h training in wrestling and boxing but not sure just how much they were fused into a an actual system. I get the impression that each was trained separately with an emphasis on wrestling/grappling (of course this would be minimal for the vast majority of troops) I know this because Lou Thesz was a h2h trainer for the army during that time and Thesz would have been versed in submissions too since he did have a legit catch background, he wasn't just an amateur wrestler. I know the Fairbairn and Sykes system (Brit system incorporating judo, jujutsu, boxing wrestling, knife fighting among others)was adopted as well but I don't know how widespread it was. It might have been training reserved for a few special units.

I would say that combat sambo has had different origins and iterations. For example the ethnic folks of Koryo-sam (Russian/Korean mix) took the sambo and mixed it with what they knew with Taekwondo and Tang Soo Do. Of course this is not a good answer to give because it lacks proof which is hard to provide due to the time and how secretive people were in that part of the world.

However one combat sambo origin story can be found and traced easy. It starts with Victor Koga who brought combat sambo in to Japan. One of his famous students went on to start Shooto because they were inspired by the idea of hybrid fighting. From there, it gave birth and inspiration to Shootfighting which is the style Ken Shamrock used which revolves around striking and grappling.

Victor Koga - Wikipedia

Gokor Chivichyan was a sambo fighter who earned the adoration and respect of Judo gene lebell when he came to America and defeated all of Genes black belts back to back. From there, they started a local fight team. But back then there was no internet or anything in particular and so fighters and fight teams were not being recorded.

Karo Parisyan at 14 years old ( 1996) was fighting in MMA ( Shootfighting/vale tudo/No Holds barred) back then and it was a thing that was very obscure but hybrid fighting did exist. They had fighters before Karo Parisyan that fought in MMA.

I think he was just saying danas candid way of talking, and combative relationship he has with some fighters, is unusual for a top executive and in the future it will probably have to change if UFC wants to be seen as more professional, or whatever. I dont think it was a criticism and he wasnt specifically talking about the ken situation, just in general. Like you dont see other executives saying some of the things dana says lol

I want to say that I respect Ken shamrock and the shootfighting culture but sadly their community failed to sell their style due to Gracie jujitsu victory.

I feel that the person who sold the idea of hybrid fighting was fedor. He could strike and grapple. Frank Shamrock is the first American fighter who pulled of a winner by being well rounded but further to happen he had to go to Javier Mendez who is the founder of AKA.

If Ken did it right the lions den would be a relevant force in MMA

I agree with you but there were certainly more hybrid fighters before fedor but no one as great as fedor.

shamrock neutralized gracies game in part 2 and just stayed in gracies realm and beat him up under the current rule set at the time.

it should have been unlimited. They had a set time. They kept adding extra time and Royce was always much worse for the wear.

there first two fights established the time and how they matched up.

when shamrock became a Victim and a basically a version of bob sapp. That’s no an accurate representation of who he was as a fighter.

even before ken lost to Royce the first fight. He was capable on his feet in the ground and knew his way about submissions and he showed it many times.

Royce was better when they first fought. Ken fought to a draw despite doing more damage in the second fight.

but even to this day. You to your shitty bjj school. And guys will complain wen they lay in there back and if you just step in ther leg or ankle and have two hands to fight a leg.

they act like it’s illegal. Or in guard and control a leg with your weight on inner knee or calf. Even I. 2021. They act like it’s a cheat code.
You can look at the ruotolo sp? Vs Nicky Ryan. How you can see some idiot like me can exploit some bjj. No go. Positions that are so obvious that very few are catching onto.

I first met Ken a couple times during his early WWF days after high school graduation. He was interacting with all the fans, posed for pictures, and signed autographs with "God Bless" along his signature. He signed his book, Inside the Lion's Den and a picture for me. He didn't have an arrogant vibe and was super chill. I requested to add him on FB friends and he accepted, and would 'read' and responded back a few times.
