I think if you have children or someone in the house who is a moron you have to be a bit more vigilant with that. Like it's OK to have one ready to rock but it has to be under control at all times.
I keep one ready to go that's pretty much on or near me at all times
I keep 2 in the bedroom that just need to be racked, both of those are attached to my carrier Someone is always home but if not I do put those up too.
Everything else is in the safe. I don't like to keep guns anywhere where if someone broke in they would have any kind of access to it before I might even be aware of them. But I also have a beagle and pitbeast so even coming into my yard let alone house isn't going to be easy and chances are I'm going to be aware of someone pretty quickly.
And a thought I just had typing that last bit for @HomeCheese ..3 people live with me and even in the dark if I hear something I don't like and get up to check it out another thing that is going to aid me in not just shooting someone if I see them moving around in the dark is how my dogs are reacting to them. If it's just swishing tails and heh heh heh heh and not grrrrr and no swish swish at all I know damn well that shadow in the dark is either my wife or 2 friends. Good judgement and being aware of your surroundings...more gun safety rules I follow.
I reinforced my doors with longer strike plates and wood screws, so that if someone wants to get in here they have to break the door or break a window. Kinda wish I had a dog but I travel too much.
