Finnegan's Wake

After being inspired by your fight success (and realizing that I may actually be getting in the cage / ring within a couple months), I decided to go back about two months in your log and pay careful attention to what it is you did exactly for your training. I actually took down notes and kind of outlined your workout to use a general template.

HOLY FUCK.

Dude, you did some serious fucking prep.

One thing I hope other readers of your log have noted is that a lot of your workout posts happened on the same day. I kind of missed that in my day to day readings of your work outs.
On some days I have you working out for nearly 5 hours. Good god man!

My question to you, and others in the know:
Is 10 hours of working out spread out over 5 days (say 2 hours a day), equal to 10 hours over 3 days (at 3.3 hours a day)? Does that make sense? Given that the recovery period is adequate in both situations.

Or do you feel like those brutal 2 a days (sometimes 3 a days) were critical? I still can't figure out how you recovered from that shit.

This is just me, but I'd rather have shorter, but more intense workouts. I find after 2-2.5 hours my ability to react/think goes out the window.

To be honest, I'm not really sure how I was able to recover so well. I kept my diet in order, not Berardi level in order for all of it, but mostly in order, kept up w/ my supplements (Beta Alanine, esp.), and backed off when I felt the need to back off.
The summer of Infinite Intensity drove my work capacity through the roof. The closer I got to the fight, if you notice, the shorter the sessions get. If I had a lifting session and an MMA session on the same day three months ago, it could total 4-6 hours. Toward the fight, the lifting was greatly abbreviated. The other thing with the long lifting sessions is that I allowed 5 minutes rest between sets, so I was able to fully recover for my next set.
But to be honest, I'm not sure, man. I think I've got some genetic advantages, Holy Gaurdian Angels, or something. Not to sound too egotistical, but I gain strength, shed fat, learn skills, increase endurance, etc at what seems to be a very, very unusual rate.

I don't know what that last sentence means, but I was thinking of this:

Not to sound too egotistical, but I gain strength, shed fat, learn skills, increase endurance, etc at what seems to be a very, very unusual rate.
and I realize that I;m getting close to 190, and you're getting close (well closer) to 205. This is not good. I must now get down 155 or something.

Quick lesson on Irish history.
Ulster is Northern Ireland. It has never went with the flow of the rest of the island, ever. The old myths and sagas of Ireland, esp those of Cuchulain, Ireland's version of Hercules (only smarter and cooler), are basically a chronicle of how pissy Northern Ireland can be. Coincidentally, their color is red, not green. The "Red Branch" were the elite warriors of Ulster who fought the invading unified front of Queen Medb in the most famous of all Irish myths, the Tain Bo Cuilagne, or "The Cattle Raid of Cooley."
Check it out sometime.

Shit, cool man.

I like stuff like that. I got a bunch of these Time/Life books on ancient civ. and wars and shit, but they didn't get into that. It was Aegean/Middle East/India.

Yeah, most books on mythology and histroy steer clear of both Northern and Eastern Europe. You'll occasionally get some watered down Norse Myths to give context to why the Vikings kicked everyone's asses, but very rarely do they go into the Celts.

The Slavic myths are pretty cool, too. Read up on Czernobog and Beilebog sometime. Good stuff.

Interesting stuff on the Irish history / mythology. I need to read more. I've got a little bit of Irish in my family tree. I've also got a decent chunk of Native American as my great Grandmother was a pure Choctaw. I'll post a picture of her sometime. I've got her nose tee hee. Anyhow, between the Irish and the Indian in me, teh alcohols does funny oh noes things to me.

Thanks for your input also Slobo.

I'm gonna research the BA today.

As I mentioned in my earlier post Finny, I've lifted your routine going back a couple months. I won't be able to fit the volume per day that you did (mostly family demands and a non-freakish genetic mojo like you got going on), but I'll modify things a bit and make it work.
If you notice that my workouts are suspiciously close to yours in the coming months, that's why. You stuck to a program, put in the hard work, and it paid off.

Any advice you guys can throw my way (re: fight prep) in my log will be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas.

Oh your fight's coming up, isn't it? Date?

The Arizona Boxing Commission still has to clear me for being an AARP card carrier. They won't be reviewing my application until sometime in April.
Once cleared, I'm going to shoot for a late May or June fight. My broken foot has set me back a bit.

Those fuckers can really make you feel old. I think I might actually have to appear before them...geez.

Shit, really?

How old are ya's?

I have one buddy who fought at age 41 or 42, former cancer patient yadayada. No one even blinked, far as I can rememberer.

He KO'd his opponent too.
Age don't mean shit sometimes.

Hot.

I'm 42. They're a little funny about it here. I could probably do an unsanctioned fight without any issues. We'll see.

I'd much rather grapple or fight a guy my own age than someone 10 or more years older. Last old guy I wrestled fuckin tooled me something fierce.

Old guys (like in there 50's+) are freaky sometimes if they're really in shape and really determined.

Absolutely. At 50, they might not be as fast or physically able as the younger guys....but they're meaner and they know stuff that young guys don't.
