That could be a very useful tool that most people can't use.

Will you be fighting in a ring or in a cage? If it'll be in a cage, getting some practice in one or against some padded walls would probably be very beneficial to you.

Interesting names on the vids. Is that to throw your opponent off?

Yeah, I tagged all the new vids as stuff like "Clownshoe Showdown" and such, and made all the old ones private (these will go private after a week or so of getting advice on here.)
DEVILsSON: Yeah, 220 is perfect for me right now. I can train right and eat right without having to kill myself doing sprints every day.
It'll be in a ring as well, so this really works to my strrengths. I wont be pinned against a cage, I'm fighting more or less at my natural weight, and its 3 fives, so my conditioning will play a nice factor in later rounds.
 
1. boxing

  • those two jokers boxing in the first half of the first vid looked terrible. you really made that big guy look bad. (i expect nothing less).

2. mma
  • you guys really need a jiujitsu instructor. your half guard escape ALMOST worked. Try not focusing on throwing him over you, but throwing yourself out the back under him.
  • maybe also ask your instructor to work on takedown defense with you. often times, sprawling isn't enough against a seasoned wrestler and you have to work hand control, cross faces, and hip control in as well.
  • 1:36 could've been a nasty rolling kneebar for you
  • he hits single legs a lot, maybe work omoplatas from there
  • you hit a few nice short uppercuts when he closed the distance. make him realize that shotting in without setting it up is going to hurt and he'll stop.

3. 2nd mma vid

  • i haven't started this vid yet, but after watching this guy box and spar your instructor, you should smash him.

after watching:

  • his low kicks are garbage, try to counter off them immediately with a hook or right straight
  • try to keep his posture broken down in your guard... nice escape back to the feet.
  • 1:58 i thought you were about to spinning backfist him. that would've been awesome.
  • GREAT HEAD MOVEMENT, especially once he got tired.
  • 4:45 great leg trip.
  • You looked really good in there. Hope some of my comments are constructive.

We've only just began to work standup regularly in the last couple of weeks, so I've got a bit of a head start.

Yes, we do need a BJJ instructor.
 
overall pretty good, but i think you should drop your stance down a bit to help with your takedown defense. Like TD said, just sprawling isn't the answer, when he got the single but you were still standing you want to instantly start pushing his head to the outside. If you want, you get get a kimura grip on his arm from here, and drop back and flip him over by using a butterfly hook on his thigh. It is a pretty good counter to a single.

Overall, i'd just say work on your takedown defense at this point.

More comments after watching you sparring with other guy:

That double you tried around 3 minutes was really lacking any penetration step at all. Set it up with a jab or something up top, then step in DEEP with the lead leg. YOu want to try and plant that knee right between their legs, then step up and turn the corner with the other foot. Also, dont put your hands on the back of his hamstrings, put them just below the knee at the top of the calves.

Good trip to the half guard. But don't start pushing on the legs until you've cross faced him. It'llgive you a much more stable position. Alternative is to turn towards his legs and put your elbow over blocking his far hip, which wont let him hip out.

Abbreviated workout due to the fact that it is less than 10 degrres F out there right now, and I was forced to wear gloves just to be able to hold the bar. I turned it into more of a conditioning/ complex mini session and will do strength again tomorrow or the next day.

Clean and Jerk:
45 x 10
135 x 8 (gloves)

Complex:
All lifts done w/ 135 lbs without rest between lifts, 2 minutes rest between sets.

Impressions:
Fuck this cold weather. First time this year I've been driven inside by the cold. Oh well. The gloves really put a hamper on the complex work. No way could I hold the bar that long.
 
Hope the tips made sense dude. If you have any questions about anything in those videos, i'd be happy to go back and see if i can giv eyou any advice from a BJJ standpoint.

One thing i just remembered when you had the guy in guard, i can see that you want to stand up from this position, but work to break him down atleast a bit. Why? 1. protect yourself. 2. it tires him to reestablish posture. 3. if you are breaking his posture he cannot be thinking of advancing yet.

Always remember you have 4 options when you have someone in your guard, and it is best if you go back and forth between them all. If you keep going for one, they will defend against it and prevnet you from doing anything with the position.

4 general options from guard- Sweep, Submit, Take the back, Stand up.

I may rewatch it later, but let me know if you have a question about a certain thing on the vid, i'll gladly help you out dude.

10 degrees F is about -12 Celsius. THAT drove you indoors? Christ that's shorts weather. It's been averaging -28 here the last few days. Which is low normal in the winter on the prairies.
 
Shut up alan. It's going to be below zero during the night in frisco today and i fear freezing to death....that's cold...these are the times I think to myself wouldnt it be nice having a bit more bodyfat to keep me warm....I have lived in extreme weather before so I appreciate frisco weather...

Finn u need to get those athletic football gloves for such circumstances...
 
It wasn't the 9 degree weather that drove me in, it was 9 degree bar. I'm going to bring it in the house and wrap it in an electric blanket so its nice and warm tomorrow. (tamil is ging for a deadlift PR attempt).

Explosive lifting + not being able to feel your hands = dead finnegan.

Your movement looks natural....this is good..

a tip or two:

Natural response to a punch coming towards your face is to push your hands out and pull your head back...you only did it a few times...that will go away in time if you concentrate on it..

I know angles are different for MMA so I can't really speak on where your head should be...but from a boxing standpoint..watch where you put weight on your back foot..like I said, your movement is great on the offensive side of the board..just take care on the defensive..create angles, don't step straight back, and don't step back "tall"...Stepping back tall while avoiding a jab will leave you open to the follow up right hand....etc..

you are clearly the best guy from a boxing standpoint ( I didn't watch the other vids) in those videos....

keep it up.

would be my suggestion. Also a light cardio warm up and perhaps light dynamic stretches are good also before actual deadlifting.
 
You should buy a portable space heater. I train in my garage as well and there is no insulation in there at all so it's basically like working out outside. So when it's that cold, I go turn the heater on like 30 minutes before my workokut and it makes a world of difference. You can put it right in front of the bar too.
 
So Fin, after you beat the ever-loving-shit (I've never really gotten that phrase) out of your opponent, you getting tags, or sticking with current handle?

Review: The Paleo Diet for Athletes
I forwent exercise last night to read through The Paleo Diet for Athletes. I don't like it. It is basically Berardi only are more incovenient. It had some good tips and excellent tables (gycemic impact, calories expended doing stuff in the wilderness, etc) and some good recipes.
However, it wants me to drink a 800-900 calorie "recovery drink" immediately after workout, which would include something ludicrous like 45-50 protein about 200 carbs, then another 400-500 calorie meal an hour and a half later.
The book is geared toward the endurance athlete, esp marathon runners, cyclists, Ironman competitors, etc; and not the combat athlete. I give it a thumbs down.

Impressions:
Not bad tonight. I smacked myself on the head and realized that *gasp* dumbells warm up faster than barbells. Consequently, I did a slightly modified Ross II workout tonight with some Oly lifts thrown in for the hell of it (once the bar warmed up)
I used my thinner bar for the Oly lifts, and it seemed to help on the cleans.
Also, I love my St. Wilhelm's hoodie. It has served me well this night.
