Fedor taps mark hunt

Even though the GOAT won this fight it was clear by this point that he was slowing down.

Watched that fight a few days back. Mark did pretty well imo. He was a way better grappler back then, dude must have stopped training. He escaped a Fedor armbar which has snagged much higher level grapplers than himself. He got mount (maybe twice) and tried a Kimura of his own which looked not super deep but Fedor escaped well. Lesser men would have tapped. Good scrap.

Prime fedor would have given Stipe or Cormier a three piece and a soda.

Prime Fedor is a backstage warm up for DC before Stipe 3

I recently watched this and the Randleman fight lately, it's interesting to go back and watch em now, even though you previously thought you knew them by memory, there's always some little detail thats new due to your ever progressing mma knowledge.

Also it's always great to hear the explosion of cheers from the respectful crowds and commentators.

BTW I miss Stephen quadros

Hunt was a noticeably worse grappler and worse wrestler back then by a wide margin. Fedor just didnt even train for that fight because he broke his foot/toe while hunting a few weeks before the fight and didnt take it very seriously and Hunt surprised him a little bit.

Hunt only became a good grappler when he moved to the US and was training his wrestling with ATT and was promoted to brown belt in BJJ under Ricardo Liborio.

His grappling was terrible before then. Just caught a sleepy, lazy goat but surprise.

Not sure if he was slowing down, he was definitely suffering from an illness here though.

Yea he had a hurt foot/ toe but in general I think it was noticeable that he wasnt training as hard as he used to. There were sequences where just didnt look very sharp.

Hunt is just hard to move. If you are a guy of Fedor's size, and dont shoot for the legs, relying on the upper body throws and trips,Hunt has such a low center of gravity,he can shrug some of that stuff off. Thats really the problem in this fight, that and getting out from under the guy. I dont think Fedor didnt take him seriously.I just think he didnt expect him to be so hard to take down. That could also be Fedor slowing down too. Also Hunt trained hard to avoid trips, since Wandy had success with them in their fight.

Disagree. He looked to actually do something not just sit there like against Stipe and Lesnar. In all of his training clips in the past forever is him kickboxing.

True.

But also looking at Hunts next fights where he got easily subbed by Reem, Mousasi and McCorkle in the UFC you can just see that he wasnt a very aware grappler. More so just strong and heavy like you said. I think a 2003-2005 Fedor would have creamed him way faster.

So how do you explain him getting treated like a white belt by 185lb young Mousasi or McCorkle in the UFC?

Hey I'm not saying he was ever good, I'm saying he did way better against Fedor back then than he did later on. Usually fighters get better at grappling and lose power, chin, cardio and speed.
