Please share your favorite atmosphere and setting in a horror movie. I think the all-time greatest is The Shining, however, Alien and The Thing are really close. My favorite movie settings include:

The Shining
Alien
The Thing (1982)
The Fog (1980)
The Howling
Suspiria

I'm big time down withe The Shining, Alien and The Thing.

Camp Crystal Lake is another favorite of mine.

I also like the jungle in Predator and the movie theater from Demons.

The Evil Dead cabin is my favorite

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

Everything in that movie is perfect for what it wanted to be. I still consider it one of the most disturbing movies of all time.

Shining was perfect.

I like when it rains a lot during horror flicks, like in Seven or The Ring.

The woods would creep me out, like in Blair Witch, but that movie blew hard.

Alien by far. I'm not a huge horror guy though.

Hellraiser/Cenobites are fun.

While The Beyond by Lucio Fulci wasn't a masterclass in atmosphere overall, it certainly did have it's moments.

Agreed on The Shining having GOAT atmosphere.

From the very first shots, and completely thoughout, Kubrick created a tense, nerve-shredding ominous atmosphere where even though not too much happened you were always on edge.

For setting, just something about the picturesque, white-picket fence, perfect suburban America of the 80's in Halloween will always be seminal horror location for me. Both nostalgic and creepy.

Honourable mentions for both atmosphere and setting, The Blair Witch - come on, lost deep in the woods in the dark (Fuck right off!), and Paranormal Activity - consumate haunted house horror.

I almost forgot Pan's Labyrinth
It looks beautiful

For a recent flick, The Witch, gave me the same feeling of being transported back in time as The Proposition.

The mist. I know a lot of people don't like it but it was the first Stephen king story I ever read and immediately felt they should make a movie. A little over a decade later they adapted it perfectly imo. The fear of the unknown and giant creatures gets to me. The claustrophobia of the grocery store. Everyone descending into their cliques and the religious fanatics taking hold. All of it played realistically to me and I just enjoyed the hell out of it.
