Exposing the Grift: Go Woke Go Broke

Oh that's my fault, didn't mean to imply that I thought that was "woke", I was making the point that I doubt the people who've an issue with Yasuke have an issue with Tom Cruisington being samurai, for.... reasons

They didn't care about Shogun either.

The same people pretending to care about Yasuke "taking away the opportunity for there to be a male Asian lead" completely ignore Shogun - a recent TV show set in feudal Japan with a white male lead.

No, that's not even close to what I said.

I'll break it down further for you.

Birdman's whole video comes from the angle of "When you say X, what you're really saying is Y which is this definition that I have decided, and to support my case, here are some movies that did well that fall into the definition that I have decided upon". That's just as manipulative as the stuff he's accusing "the other side" of. Having minorites, queer people, and women in a movie doesn't magically make it "woke", that's the most bad faith, surface level interpretation of it that it's clearly done to gloss over everything, and gives a reason to just say "You don't like it because it has this in it, bigot!"

You can't say "This is what you really mean, and now here is a list of things that proves that I'm right". It doesn't work that way, because all you need to do is bring up Doctor Who, Star Wars, Marvel, Charlie's Angels, The American Society of Megical..., Dustborn, Concord, the American Comic Book Industry, and many others that prove the opposite, it does nothing to prove which is right or wrong, and becomes whataboutery, and petty point scoring and doesn't actually come to the crux of the problem.

Laziness, lack of creativity, and good old-fashioned hubris.

The whole point was that the entertainment industry are just saying "We're remaking this, but this time they're [insert the desired swap]" (eg Ghostbusters), and "We're reimagining it for modern audiences!" (eg pretty much all remakes) or doing sequels to popular properties where the main character is either denigrated, or takes a back seat in their own franchise (Mad Max, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny), and the fanbases of said franchises are walking away because they're changing too much shit.

I'm saying they can have "woke movies" that are successful, because they actually made the good, but the bad ones heavily outweigh the good because all they're bringing is "Look! It's diverse!", heavy handed political messaging, and nothing else.
All covered and his point is it's not go woke, go broke sometimes". In every counter example the writing sucked, poorly made.

Fury Road & Furiosa IIRC was in the works for many moons, that was the direction he wanted to take it, don't think it had anything to do with modern audiences.

Kinda the point, woke has no meaning naywmore anyway. You make eloquent, we'll thought out posts that agree with his entire premise lol. Props for having a brain either way

Ubi isn't going broke because they went "woke", it's because they put out shitty games.
They released a game in July called BattleCore Arena. The last time I checked steamcharts, it had an all time peak player count of like 100 people.
Then there's Hyperscape, Extraction, and Roller Champions.
Wokeness had nothing to do with those 4 games, and they all flopped.
All of which has been explained to him for like 20+ pages

I understand and those were brought up here before. Again, imo it was a horrible take using Ubisoft's Assasin's Creed Shadow with a Go woke, Go broke slogan as a thumbnail and topic. The guy is trying to make wokeness a feature. He considers movies with different ethnicities as woke in another clip posted here. It's trying to be the black Anita Sarkeesian.

Did they complain about Into the Badlands?

Did they complain about Warrior on Cinemax?

Did they complain about the Brothers Sun?

Brothers Sun was a great show

Enjoyed it a tonne

Also enjoyed Kill Boksoon and Ballerina recently. Couple of very entertaining Korean movies

Around the same time I watched Brothers Sun I watched another really enjoyable tv show about Chinese in the US, set years ago. Think it was called Warrior or something similar - oh, just noticed you mentioned Warrior too. Ha ha

There's a British show called "Humans", which was a remake of a Swedish show, it's about androids that gain sentience. Fantastic piece of television.

It had messaging about immigration, workers rights, animal cruelty, racism, but was so well done, nobody had an issue with it, it was just a good show first and foremost.

I strongly recommend people watch the Swedish show first.

Often the way that the original is better than the remake

Infernal affairs is even better than Departed for example

Mind you, infernal affairs had only Chinese people in it from memory. Perhaps we need to go and bully Hong Kong people about who they put in their movies?

He names examples that have political messaging, diversity, and in some cases race and gender swaps. The Anita comment makes no sense.

You guys can't have it all ways. Even if YOU personally don't complain about certain things or call them woke others do. Either way, there's plenty of examples of successful "woke" companies and media by the varying definitions which vary from person-to-person. His point stands.

William and his grift squad are also getting exposed more and more as time goes on, with their own words. You can deny it, you can cry, no one cares, people cite his own videos and make full on video essays exposing his/their bullshit.

No one complained about white guys being samurai or starring in samurai movies but a black dude who was a real person is a problem. Not a good look no matter how you spin it. It took 20+ pages for you guys to vaguely acknowledge that everyone in this thread has been shitting on Ubisoft and explaining why they suck.

Conservative media guys like Ben Shapiro and William had meltdowns over fucking Barbie. You can't make this shit up. Even conservative and apolitical people have commented ON THIS FORUM that William's constant ID politics get old.

Facts over feelings sweetie. Enjoy your peloton class.

How did we forget this other steaming jobby of a woke product

Another example of woke / DEI focused releases doing well <DCWhoa>

Character design was the least of their problems there.

A white guy is one the leads in Shogun which came out a few months ago. Are you offended by either? Do you think anyone else mentioning Yasuke is?

I'll also repeat for the 5,000th time: There's two playable characters in the game: The other is Japanese. Yasuke has also been a playable character in other Japanese games no less. He was also in an anime on Nertflerx that came out a few years ago. Yasuke was also a real person regardless of our limited knowledge of him. Ubisoft having him be a main character isn't why this game is going to suck, yeah?

Yo, it is about first contact and he is Portugese, I imagine some people dislike the Cruise Samurai movie.

Game is not out yet.

Yasuke was a real person. I didn't ask if people disliked that movie, I'm sure some people dislike the movie, that's literally every movie ever. I asked if you think anyone is offended by it, namely, the people claiming to be offended by Yasuke being one of two, two main characters in a game. Ubisoft are not even the first to feature him as a playable character in a game.

I wonder what the people complaining in this thread (and I'm sure others) would say if there was a Japanese series that featured Yasuke as prominently as Jarvis was in Shogun. That's not a loaded question; I genuinely wonder.

Game is not out yet,in a vacuum it could be fine, but looking at Ubisoft and gaming the last couple of years it is a different matter.

Nah they toned down Shogun. The original one was honestly white savior comes and helps the savages. OG Blackthorne was like a secret agent man who had so many skills. New Blackthorne was nerfed. The Japanese perception of him on the show is more of a buffoon.

In the new version Hiroyuki Sanada carries the show. He won the emmy for lead actor in the shogun series. The new version also offers insight from a Japanese perspective. There is a reason the original was not popular in Japan while the new one is. Sanada was the producer of the series. This is his vision as a Japanese man. This is one of the few Japanese people Ubisoft hired as an consultant. Look at what she specializes in. https://faculty-directory.dartmouth.edu/sachi-schmidt-hori

It's Ubisoft so at best more mediocrity is likely on the menu

Look, fumbling whataboutism!

The reason the "same people" don't complain about Shogun is because the entire premise of that show isn't a white guy being a badass Samurai in ancient feudal Japan, but a study of the unavoidable moment in history when West would meet East, in this case Japan, the most famously insular advanced civilization in human history, articulated through the story of a character based on a real man, an opportunistic navigator who wasn't some obscure figure of history, but one of the most influential foreigners in the history of the country. That character also isn't the true hero of the story, duh, or did you not notice the series wasn't even named after his character? It's called Shogun. As Clavell intended, he functions as our eyewitness and practical narrator to the far more important figure in Japanese history, his native lord, who he serves.

Indeed, it's also adapting a novel that was written nearly 50 years ago, and one of the showrunners who created the project is a Japanese-American woman!
