Imagine this beast at UFC 1 or PRIDE 1
Evolution of MMA is more hype than reality.
Hype and rule changes have you believing the opposite of what has actually happened... fighters haven't evolved, fights have evolved into sport. The rules used to be simple, no gloves, no rules just use your discipline to kick the other guy's ass. Now? Use a cup, if you just graze the cup you get 5 minutes, no finger or digit manipulation, no eye, throat or spine/back of the head strikes, no kicking a downed opponet in the head, you have to wear gloves, you get to rest between rounds, yes, there are now rounds and, most of all, WEIGHT CLASSES.
We see a lot more "talent" in today's fight game only because the rules and regulations, mentioned above, allow more people to participate. With no weightclasses how many Aldos, Demetrious Johnsons, McGregors, GSPs and jon joneses would you see? Hell, even the 265lb cap limits what is truly out there.
We can't complain too much because we have gotten to see some amazing fights and characters through "the evolution" but we can't forget that this isn't really fighting anymore. It has become a sport.

Despite the fact he would have outweighed Fedor and Nog by a ton, he still gets finished by both of them.Imagine this beast at UFC 1 or PRIDE 1

It's as if he is a transplant/throwback.Imagine this beast at UFC 1 or PRIDE 1

Dropped with a Fedor overhand right and rear naked choked to a tap. Big Nog takes a few shots to get him down, wears him out and subs him.Despite the fact he would have outweighed Fedor and Nog by a ton, he still gets finished by both of them.
wtf why would u use the most skilled fighter ever as an example? gsp would've been undefeated if he fought back in the dayEvolution of MMA is more hype than reality.

Gsp got subbed by a 5'9 190lb Matt Hughes, he got KO'd by a 5'6" 180lb Matt Serra, he got wrecked by a 5'8 200lb Hendrix and a 5'9" 170lb Penn with all kinds of rules, rounds and gloves, what makes you think he would last 5 minutes in an open weight, no time limit, no holds barred, multiple fights in one night tournament?wtf why would u use the most skilled fighter ever as an example? gsp would've been undefeated if he fought back in the day
Yes. Hughes landed a fluke armbar, Mini Matt was the only person who ever clipped him, and both Hendricks and BJ also would've ran a train through any of those goofy tournaments back in the day, if he showed up in their prime condition.Gsp got subbed by a 5'9 190lb Matt Hughes, he got KO'd by a 5'6" 180lb Matt Serra, he got wrecked by a 5'8 200lb Hendrix and a 5'9" 170lb Penn with all kinds of rules, rounds and gloves, what makes you think he would last 5 minutes in an open weight, no time limit, no holds barred, multiple fights in one night tournament?
So you believe that GSP beats Gracie, Shamrock, Ortiz, Severn and Coleman but he cuts 40lbs to avoid guys their size?Yes. What if both agree to a no-holds barred fight? Wouldn't that show how far "evolved" MMA has become?Lmao you cant be serious. It would be morally wrong to even sanction that shit.
It depends on what you are looking for...are you here to be entertained or are you interested in finding out who is the best fighter and/or which discipline is superior?MMA as a sport>>>MMA as a freakshow circus

I am technically a Heavyweight, so no, those smaller guys would not "burn through me" because I won't cut weight to face them. They will all be stomping around saying,"ooh, you don't know what I would do to that guy if he cut weight"...blah, blah, blah. You have terrible perception of skill level. Yes, it evolved into a sport. The skill level is also higher. We don’t need open weight tournaments and minimal rules for fighting to evolve. It may not be nhb but it’s still fighting. Most of those guys would burn though you easy with their “sport fighting.”
do you even train? what? Kali? Krav Maga? Systema? Lol

As for the "evolution", you missed the point. I'm not saying that the UFC hasn't evolved into something more, I am saying that fighting hasn't evolved.
You're a moron to even think that. In a ring, a flyweight would kick my ass but in a street fight, things are different, little brother. The fact that you don't understand this is telling .welterweight and above would burn through you in a real fight.
what do you train?
the skill level has evolved.
I read through this whole thread and I’m 50/50 on agreeing with you. I disagree because I think fighting overall has evolved because a greater percentage of people in the world today have a better understanding of striking and grappling due in great part to the evolution and popularity of the sport of mma. Today, we have more access to learn than at any other time in history due to well rounded mma gyms, YouTube, streaming, videos, etc. However, I do agree with you that actual combat situations don’t have rules, weight divisions, time limits, or rounds. Those early ufc guys had to fight three different people in one night just to have the possibility to win 50 grand. You had no idea how big your opponent would be, you had no time limits and there were almost no rules. You weren’t game planning for a specific style. You just had to be better than whoever they threw at you. I can actually say that there probably was never a truer test of who the best really is than those early UFC/mma days.I am technically a Heavyweight, so no, those smaller guys would not "burn through me" because I won't cut weight to face them. Great post and a rare gem on Sherdog. There have actually been a few solid ones on this topic.I read through this whole thread and I’m 50/50 on agreeing with you. That would be glorious. Not gonna happen but would be spectacular if it did. Picturing Jones, Izzy, Stipe, Frances, Jiri, Johnson, Blades, and BB off the top of my head.Great post and a rare gem on Sherdog. There have actually been a few solid ones on this topic.
I agree with you on the availability to learn and train MMA. I just wish that, every now and then, we could have an open tournament to see what styles/fighters can actually excel in real combat.
