Evolution of MMA is more hype...

We can’t say for certain, the answer is “We don’t know.”

But truthfully, the average MMA fighter does use more varied techniques in combination than in the past. They blend multiple techniques together more seamlessly.

I mean, look at the takedowns. Before you Coleman style doubles, basic stuff, no you got guys using a over the shoulder & single leg combined to force a takedown, like Frankie Edgar likes to do. You simply didn’t see that stuff back in the day. Calf kicks? I’m sure they’ve been around since Burma and Siam were going at it, but notice how they implement them with more regularity now?

The sport has evolved, the athletes are getting better using a variety of tools and strategies. We don’t know what would happen in an old school tourney which I’m very familiar with, but that doesn’t mean they’d lose, we just don’t know.

One thing is certain, without gloves and full hand wraps, punching would be more risky. You can break your hand even if you win, and fighting 3-4 times in one night would be virtually impossible, without taking tons of punishment. Gordeau fought Royce after spraining his wrist, having his foot bandaged from Tuli’s tooth. That’s not what you want to have going into a new fight.
Great take. I did mention gloves but forgot the hand wraps. They all make a huge difference in setting up a strategy and even the HW's would have to reconsider going all in on punches because of exactly what you said, broken/fractured knuckles.

We don't know how fighters would fare today in an open weight tournament but we may have given the UFC an old multi-million dollar idea back. After all, a "no rules" tournament did get all of this started.

I miss open-weight tournaments.

Sorry, but EVERY mma fighter, with only a few exceptions, has a WAY bigger arsenal than they would have 15, 20 years ago. There's simply more cross-training and exposure to more effective techniques. My own experience reflects this as well. I think fairly objectively that the simple answer would be "yes". I also think using Stipe and Usman, who are fairly basic wrestler wrestler/boxers, isn't representative of the changes and "new breeds" of fighters that are out there right now.
Just call them players. They play the sport of fighting.

Let some of the guys of today feel that and watch how strategy changes.... "head kick, take down, jab...oh, and don't get punched in the balls."

I’d be happy with just allowing knees in a downed opponent. That one thing would change a lot of outcomes IMO. Changing round times or no time limit isn’t practical for PPV events and one 9 minute round could end in one long hugging match with one guy refusing to disengage while the other is happy to just hold on and throw pitter patter punches.

The knees are definitely a "strategy changer" and you can't pull that "my hand is touching the mat" bullshit. As for the rounds, in a 3 rounder, you could have one 10 minute round with two 5 minute rounds following or in a championship match, one 10 minute round followed by three 5-minute rounds. Either way, it would throw the whole coasting/pacing yourself out of the window.

to clarify, I mean that at this point in AA's career he's basically "playing" mma: he goes for point-fighting, and no longer goes for take-downs or really even KOs. He just point-fights like it's a TKD tourney. Add to that his recent tap-fest before the rear-naked was even cinched and he just seems like he's phoning them in: "playing" a round of MMA instead of bringing the fight.
