Disney and their shills are actually criticizing the professional critics?
This has to be a first.
And listen to the comment in that Variety clip... 'Oh its diverse and has a female director so it MUST be awesome, but that's why the critics hate it.'
Wow, gaslighting the fans isn't anything new, but gaslighting the critics.... this is a first.

I was entertained. There are weaknesses for sure and it never really comes together as a cogent whole but I thought there were solid scenes and I liked the cast. Overall, I’d give it a recommend. Certainly not my least favorite MCU film.
And for all the early reaction quotes of “it’s nothing like other mcu movies” it seemed quite MCU-ish to me. The early stuff with Chan and Harington for instance felt right out of the MCU humor playbook.
I didn't have an issue with the pacing really. But you're right they definitely tried to cram a lot into one film and you could feel that. I give the cast credit though because I thought they sold the idea of a.) being a team and b.) having been around a long, long time pretty damn well.
It just felt like it was missing some x factor that might have brought it to a higher plane. It did not feel like a coherent whole to me- the sum of the parts was a bit lacking but a lot of the parts were quite good as far as I was concerned.
This movie made it clear that directing hero movies with huge casts take a certain talent and skill , one that Chloe Zhao doesn't have.
All of the characters were very one-dimensional...which is a shame considering the very capable and talented cast that was assembled.
For beings that have thousands of years of experience on Earth and being among humans, they didn't seem to have much wisdom or insight on anything.
I never really got a sense of what any of them really wanted, or what motivated them to do what they do.
There was an attempt to show their lives throughout the centuries, but it was all fluff that didn't really show or tell much of anything about the actual characters. The whole movie just felt like they were reading me a dry story instead of actually showing what was going on.
The dialogue was god awful. Chloe Zhao is billed as one of the writers, and I know she was born in China, and I honestly was wondering throughout the movie how much writing she did, and how good her English is....or isn't. There were so many conversations that came off as unnatural, that I was questioning whether or not it came from a native English speaker. It felt like a bad script from the 90's.
We have characters still saying "You suck". in 2021.
The story didn't make a lot of sense, and I'm honestly pretty baffled that they let such a foundational movie like this fly because it messes with a lot of other things.
There were some good ideas and concepts that they would just barely TOUCH, and then they would completely ruin it and the somber or serious mood that they just set up with a terrible joke.
*They made Kitt Harrington's Black Knight a complete and total simp and idiot.
*The relationship between him and Sersi was like that of two cousins. There was no chemistry, and every interaction between them was beyond bizarre.
The world is about to end, and she facetimes him to tell him to "make amends with his uncle"......??? This is the guy you're supposedly in love with...?
*Marvel's first sex scene! And it was very odd and very out of place...
*lol Ikarus just decides to fly into the sun at the end to die....and there really is no real logical set up for why he betrays everyone.
*There is like a bizarre abortion type of argument...where they don't want to kill the new baby celestial before it hatches (even though its birth means the destruction of Earth) because that means billions of other new lives won't get a chance to be born.....
*With how they set up things in this movie, I think Galactus is going to be a celestial.
*And what were some of these powers? Finger guns? Super fists?
*You had the beginnings of an interesting character in the Deviant...and then...you kill him.
*Harry Styles as Thanos' brother, Eros? GTFO
*It was also really weird how they brought up Batman and Superman in the movie.
I had higher hopes for this, because the current comics of the Eternals has some interesting stories...and with Zhao's indie background, I thought that's what she would explore.
For example, Makkari is deaf because she tried to contact the gods/celestials (she's a true believer), and that attempt jacked her up. They could have focused a lot more on the Eternals looking up to their Gods...and how they each see them and the "mission" they've been given. They just barely touch on this, but don't really get into it.
The story of Sprite is completely squandered. They bring up her problem of being a child forever, but then it's also joked about by everyone so it's impossible to take it seriously. And at the end for Sersi to just change her into a human was some Disney cartoon fantasy nonsense.
the so Sprite, you want to be human part definitely felt painfully tacked on and contrived lol. Pretty convenient Gemma derived the power to specifically do that...
I hope they are aware of standard City of Angels with Nic Cage rules, you choose to be mortal and something horrible happens almost immediately. I was half expecting Sersi to vindictively shank her after the transformation and tell her that's what it's like to be mortal but, you know, that would be a different movie.
I thought the Madden heel reveal was totally solid though. Seemed to all add up to me. I like situations where there's a bit more depth to a bad guy than pure evil intentions and, from Madden's perspective, he was just going along with the program they were all expected to follow for thousands of years. That was their mission as horrific as it sounds. From his perspective, Hayek is the one that has betrayed them. Obviously I rooted for the pro-Earth Eternals, but Icarus being the way he was seemed to add up.
Of course, having him kill Hayek in an irredeemably messed up way certainly made it quite clear that he was the bad guy. Can't find much ambiguity there.

But this is the first time that woke activists posing as movie critics are attacking actual movie critics for not liking a movie that checks all the woke checkboxes.
Some of the the "Woke" stuff was on the nose but short An openly Gay Muslim character sharing a kiss with one of the Main heroes, hmmmm I wonder why this is getting pulled in the middle east , odd.
Anyways overall this movie is only MCU in that it name drops Avengers Characters and Thanos and has superpowers , but overall the tone felt like this could have been a stand alone scifi flic that misses the mark a bit. The Eternals are very powerful and the deviant design is pretty cool with top notch effects. That said the Ensemble Chemistry was hit and miss at times.

I really liked the effects and the visuals overall. I thought some of the Madden flying at a fast clip stuff and Lauren Ridloff’s super speed looked sick.
Icarus’ powers in general had me wishing cyclops had been given more to do in the X-Men movies lol.

Yeah the Speed effects for Makkari are awesome worthy of Mercury , considering how fast she got to the otherside of the Planet easily the MCU's fastest speedster , although Ikaris is full space flight might rival it. The liked also that all the Eternals despite having their own skill sets are also very durable, Ikaris gave Druig a Full blast of his lasers and he still survived it.
It will be cool to see the X-Men with the full MCU effects budget. Although Cyclops eye blasts are heat lasers they are more of a concussion blast it will be cool to see his effects .

I liked some of the nuanced character elements and the fact that the film did not always go for the most cliched route. As soon as Kumail bowed out, indicating that he would support the plan whereby they allowed the celestial to emerge, I figured that he was too clouded by his respect for Ikarus and he would clearly come back at the 11th hour to face off against him to enable Sersi and co. to finish the job. It didn't happen. I thought that was interesting if only because it didn't fit right into the most conventional way they could have had that narrative play out.
It also begged the question of why he would suddenly change from wanting to thwart the Celestial's birth to allowing it. But the movie did a decent enough job of showing that Ikarus could sway opinions there by virtue of being considered the de facto leader. This is similar to the way Sprite abandons the gameplan, too. I thought that added an interesting dynamic that Sersi is clearly qualified to lead and clearly powerful but was underestimated a bit, even to the extent that a few of the Eternals would defer to Madden instead despite the fact that she had been chosen as Hayek's successor.
One other thing that I liked was how Madden's cover story of why he left Sersi didn't seem to entirely hold water. To me, the film pretty heavily implied that he didn't leave her so much because he was worried he wouldn't be able to prevent himself from telling her the truth of Earth's destiny, but more so because he wanted to make it easier for himself to stick to that protocol. It would be far more devastating to him to have to accept a different existence with a different memory, without her by his side if they remained together. By keeping his distance, he could make that fate more palatable.
