Elephant in the room: next LW champ is a paper champ

Meh. A paper champ scenario is overblown a lot. What is the division supposed to do? They can't just never have a lightweight title fight again. The sport moves on

I want to see Conor vs Uber-Mendes

by this logic

Jan is a paper champ.

Yan is a paper champ too.
Not quite with Jan as he dominated Reyes who arguably beat Jones. You can't make the same argument for anyone in lightweight, especially the guys fighting for the belt.

i think paper champ status will be less of an issue with oliveira, especially if he can defend the belt against Dustin. the guy is on an 8 fight win streak and destroyed tony. having tony, dustin, and chandler on your resume is comparable to dustin, gaethje, conor... just my opinion

if chandler wins... then a 5'5 dude in bellator is the best LW in the world.

Even Khabib was a paper champ for winning the title off 11th ranked Al at the time. Obviously Khabib was/is legit, but at the time… yikes. Anyone who doesn’t get the belt by beating an existing champ will always be a paper champ until defending against top competitors.

Oh, Conor only needs a split decision to get his title fight. Nothing spectacular needed.
Conor can win off of a DQ and he'll get that shot.

Neither of those 2 guys have lost to Khabib. It's legitimate if you ask me. A paper champ would be someone like DC who lost to Jones twice (albeit cheater Jones), but was given the title right after Jones got stripped. would have been nice to see Khabib against the winner of tomorrow night.

WW and MW are paper Champs because KHAMZAT beats them both as soon as he gets the opportunity

Khamzat's arrival on the scene has turned UFC's tigers into paper tigers.

lol all you have to do is retire with the belt and you are forever champion.

You could become eternal champion by getting into a car accident lol

Forty years later and Salvador Sanchez still holds the WBC featherweight belt. Still My Boy!

Poirier sure. But why the fuck would they have to beat Gaethje to legitimize their title? Guy had 1 title fight and lost, haven't fought since then, and 4-2 outside of title fight.

Sick and tired of Sherdog talking about this guy like he should be regarded the same as guys like Poirier/Khabib or even Oliveira

Khabib ran from Oliveira, also ducked several other guys. The winner is the legit champ and Khabib wants nothing to do with somebody that can grapple. It's why he never fought anybody known for elite grappling or a good bjj game off of their back. He was scheduled against 2 guys that were known for being decent off of their backs and pulled out multiple times against both of them.
Sherdog logic if someone retired or just never fought they must have ducked them or ran.

Am I the only one doesn’t really care? Whoever wins tonight is the champ. People can try and denigrate if that want. I doubt the victorious fighter will give a fuck. Titles aren’t always lineal. Won’t be the first time this has ever happened in combat sports.

Gaethje has zero bjj and hasn't wrestled since starting MMA and becoming a striker. RDA got molested By Usman and Michael fucking Chiesa and has absolutely nothing to offer from his back. What Grapplers did Gaethje face before fighting Khabib? Michael Johnson? Barboza? Yeah those dudes are amazing Grapplers!
RDA was dramatically outsized by both Chiesa and Usman. Thanks for exposing yourself as a casul. RDA is a great grappler who absolutely demolished Nate Diaz on the ground and scored 3 takedowns on Colby.

Glad that you dismiss Gaethje's D1 wrestling credentials and I agree: American wrestling credentials are worthless. Based on this, there are no good wrestlers in LW aside from Islam and maybe Arman and that Swedish greco guy Madsen, but these fighters (aside from Islam) will not reach the top for a very long while, if ever.

When it comes to submission grapplers, only 2 guys at LW ever had a chance against Khabib on the ground: Ramos and CDF. Ramos got dominated on the ground by Islam, making it safe to say that Khabib would have probably dominated him too. CDF was extremely dangerous in his prime on the ground, but now has entered a steep decline. Sadly, CDF was never ranked high enough to fight Khabib. There's also Dariush who is also very good on the ground and I have to say that of all the submission grappling specialists he's the only one who could have realistically fought Khabib, had Khabib not retired, because he's going to embarrass Phoney and maybe rise to the top 5, becoming a title contender.

But Oliveira, the can who got demolished on the ground by Felder and never had elite BJJ? The can who is praised by casuals, because he subbed some other cans with zero BJJ credentials? Ahahaha, no. No one will remember him after Chandler takes his head off tonight.

Lmfao can you imagine if Conor beats Dustin (40% chance imho) then manages to KO whoever wins today?

Sherdog would melt.

I hate the "paper champ" argument because it's mainly an argument used to shit on fighters. If a fighter wins the belt, he's the champ. Those are the facts...

mostly agree. Justin should be there instead of Conman tho.
Winner vs winner (Charles/Chandler and Dustin/Conor) should be considered legit champ IMO. And this is from a Khabib fan. Division has to move on now.
