Media Edwards doesn't want to fight in July

Historically the debate has been about stripping a fighter after a year. Now it's 4 months?

Usually a fighter who fought in March, being offered a fight in July, and countering with October wouldn't even be news worthy. It should come as no surprise that the rules (or lack thereof) might be different for a less beloved fighters....

Most new champs do not want to risk to lose the belt after a few months. If they manage to wait 9-10 months, it can be rounded up to a year if they were to lose the first defense.

Clearly he is ducking Colby. The worst stylistic matchup possible.

Leon would have been happy to fight Masdival in July.

While this practice is annoying, there is precedent.

Bisping willingly admitted he would fight an easier fight for more money before surgery, otherwise do surgery and put off a defense. So he put off Romero, got the surgery, and low and behold, GSP became available.

DC too (he fought Beast - big money, short notice, easy bout - and then had surgery).

I can only assume others have done the same, just quieter. I wouldn't blame any fighter for staying quiet on something like this lol

(NOTE: this isn't me defending Edwards or the practice - just adding context).

How tf is that quick? Especially when you didn't take much damage?

You are supposed to defend 3 times a year if healthy, it's fair to all contenders and God forbid pays the bills too. It's a fucking diva move.

Who said 3 times a year ?

Wtf is this now?..

Is there a current champion operating on this 3 fight rule?

Or this is a rule for Leon and no1 else

Usman was the worst match up..and he beat him twice...even though im not 100% on leons last win..he did win .

colby is a weaker version of Usman this was proven in there two fights ..

Leon has already beaten his worst match up ...outside maybe Khamzat who isnt professional enough to be a champion anyways..so he doesnt count

Totally.

1.8/yr average is in my head for some reason (don't know how it got there). I remember Fig brought the average up a bit, and so has Izzy.

Here's a thread from 2020 that tries to do some math. Jones at 1.6 per year, Stipe at 1 per year, Holloway at 1.6/yr, etc, etc. Funny, Rousey has the highest number at 2.3 defenses per year. I'm sure OP just became a big RR fan ;)

Anyway, the point is, the average is below 2 (I'm pretty sure). So if OP's strongest argument is that Edwards should be defending 3x/yr...well, let's just say that's a less-than-compelling argument.

Is this guy turning into a diva? First he doesn't want to fight Covington now he says July is too early ? TF? He fought in March that's like 4 months .

It's not how long you are champ Leon, it's how many times you defend the title.

Look at you now Leon , look at you now .
Training camps for 5 round fights are often 12 weeks, that means he would have to be back into training camp less than a month after his first title defense. Not wanting to do another 12 week camp so soon doesn't make him a diva, in fact him being asked to do a quick turnaround is what is abnormal for a champion.

not a written rule but seems logical and fair.

How many times do you think they should defend?

but he would be ok to fight Masvidal in July , right?

Emphasizing so the dummy won't miss it.

I will also reiterate that a fighter who fought in March, being offered a fight in July, and countering with October usually wouldn't even be news worthy. Which begs the question, what's different this time? Yes, that this is a rhetorical question.

Dana would love that. Colby-Burns for interim belt, winner fights winner of Conor-Chandler on the UFC 300 card for the "undisputed lineal" belt.
If Leon wants to be difficult unfortunately the UFC or DW can do a plethora of silly things to mess with him, I personally have gotten used to champs defending 2x a year. You have Islam who wants to stay active told to wait and then Edwards is expected to be ready in 4 months lol, just typical Ultimate Fight Circus with business clownish as usual.

This is Leontalking nonsense that made this a bigger deal than it should be. Had he just been open to fighting anyone this wouldn’t be an issue. Had his management been any good they would be said we will see you in October to Colby and left it at that. Now it’s just a matter of bad optics. Now not only is he not open to fighting Colby but he’s also not open to fighting in July. July is an absurd turn around. Ufc is just setting him up to look bad.

Why not make an interim title fight?

Colby/Belal.

Then Edwards fights winner.
I'd be cool with that actually. So would Belal. Colby wouldn't

a) who is more deserving than Colby at the current state?
b)look at UFC rankings to see who is the top contenders
c)yes , he absolutely fucking is

And for your info, I am not even a Colby fan and it's possible to keep two thoughts in your head : Not be a Colby fan but still believe his one of the most deserving in the divisino.
A) Most people
B) Holy shit, so you're just illiterate then, huh?
C) Where's his buys at? Not his twitter follows or Youtube numbers. Where are the buys?

So you want them to fight once a year???
I think Dana's Colbyboner popping up on the same night has you confused like this has been a long time coming. His last fight was less than a month ago. He has over 11 months to fight again to fight more than once a year. Relax.

Khamzat vs Leon for the WW title
Khamzat vs Adesanya for the MW title
Khamzat vs Hill for the LHW title

Just let him smesh, bro.
