Movies Drive (2011)

Just my opinion but one of the most overrated movies ever made. To this day even thinking about it makes my blood boil with rage and I dont see what anyone enjoys about it

Now watch all of Refn's other movies. None quite get to the level of Drive but I think they are all good.

If I had to recommend the 2nd best, it would be Bronson. Great movie.

I also recommend Gosling's directorial debut "Lost River". It's kind of a white trash fairy tale but has a really interesting atmosphere and style like Refn.

Lol, you're like the Karen who sued the studio because she was under the impression it was going to be like The Fast and the Furious.

The only other film I saw by him was Only God Forgives, and aside from a badass score, I thought the movie was shit. "What the hell am I watching?!" kept going through my mind.

One of my fav films

Seems to be a hit or miss here on sherdog though

Should have at least been nominated for Best Picture in 2012-- arguably should have won. Revisit some of the sap that was nominated nobody talks about anymore:
  • Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
  • The Help
  • War Horse
  • The Tree of Life
One for the emo crowd

*brb driving around to listening to Nightcall*
Oh, GTFO. Save that blast for this piece of crap:

Bronson is more straight forward. It's a must watch. I hate to waste this scene but you'll know if the movie is for your based on this alone:

Drive is incredible, about as close as you can get to a perfect film given the source material and what Refn was going for.

The film really sucks you in to the world of the Driver. The intro is one of the best ever in films. I really hate it when directors forget that the first few minutes of a film are so crucial to engaging the viewer and getting them invested right away, and that is exactly what Drive does.

I know some people check out as soon as it slows down and begins to explore the relationship between the Driver and Irene, but I think its very tastefully done. Gosling's character is clearly channeling old school Hollywood masculine energy in the way he dresses and carries himself, being mysterious, dangerous, and heroic all at the same time. I also really like that Carey Mulligan doesn't look like a typical Instagram model or what most men imagine as an ideal woman. She is very pretty but in a very understated, classy way. It makes everything feel more grounded and sincere before devolving into total pandemonium by the climax.

Did the elevator kiss really happen? Or was it a taxi driver moment that only existed in his imagination? idealizing a relationship and romance he had wanted all along but could never have because of who he really was

Yea I loved this movie too. Pretty polarizing movie it seems. Many think it’s a masterpiece and others think it’s absolute shit

Mostly because its not really what many might expect, there are some stylish crime thriller parts to it but mostly its a subtle indie drama/romance.

If you want more of the standard thriller(although still some of the same kind of drama)I would recommend one of the films its based on in Walter Hills The Driver from 1978 with Ryan O'Neil.

Again I think it is a bit of bait and switch, not to the degree it doesnt offer alot of what you might expect but it does also push the story in a direction away from stylsh crime thriller but very effectively so IMHO.

In one respect it does have alot of references to older stuff like The Driver and Theif plus the semi revivalist soundtrack but in another its very modern in its style and has arguably become the posterboy for that style. The idea of mostly taking the dialog out the performance or at least making it rather unimportant and instead focusing mostly on physical performance. Ironically given how hyper masculine Gosling's character is to the point of autism I would say actually thats a style more typically associated with actresses. Its not really the "strong and silent" of Eastwood, its more like the male equivlent of what people like Carey Mulligan or Portman/Johansson or loads of european arthouse actresses built alot of their careers on, being able to sell emotion in a subtle fashion via facial expression/body movement.

the only place this movie is mentioned is in the Mayberry. No one ever talks about Drive anywhere.

The elevator scene is tremendous. From the moment he moves her over into the corner, with the change of lighting then the explosion of violence, the shock on her face, the disappointment on his, then ultimately finishing with a shot of the Scorpion on his back, breathing. Its an incredible scene.

Video in spoilers in case you don't want to see it.

This scene was incredible. Rewinded it several times

I fell asleep near the end but I do remember enjoying what I saw. I should probably try watching it again.

I was cringing from the awkwardness of his dialogue with the main love interest at the beginning of the movie though.
