Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages

in 1993 what could they really have done anyway other than write some shit in the instruction manual? lol

There’s a game that came out in 1995 or 1996 called Strife that was using the original Doom engine (not more advanced source ports like GZDoom or anything like that) and it’s got all these rpg elements to it and dialogue with NPCs and shit. They easily could have done that with Doom.

The original System Shock also came out not long after Doom and has all those elements as well, so it’s easy to look at a game like System Shock and think that Doom could have been closer to that had Tom Hall had his way.

Marathon in 94 told it's story through logs and computer terminals as well. So options could've been done for more story elements.

Well DOOM is what it is and im glad for it.

I didnt like when they went too far with trying to change things with DOOM 3

But what they been trying to do with 2016 and Eternal, they are on the right track. Especially the way the automated voice tries to tell the demons what to do, and how the more "sentient" beings react to the doom slayer

its fuckin hilarious.

The engines used in 2016 and Eternal are truly incredible. I remember id made bank licensing their older Quake engines, but they don't seem interested in doing that anymore.. I wonder why. I feel like other devs would be interested.

Heck, since MS owns Bethesda which id is a part of, they could theoretically use the id tech for a Halo game and still technically keep the tech "in house" but they are going with Unreal for the next Halo.

I don't get it..

Eternal is just one of the best optimised games ever made, it's incredible what they managed to do. All studios should strive to be do what they did.

The Wolfenstein games have all been made using the Doom 2016 engine (id tech 6) and the new Indiana Jones game has been made using the Doom Eternal engine (id tech 7).

As for licensing their engine out, while it’s a great engine it cannot do everything well. It’s apparently not well suited for large open worlds. I saw a video discussion where people were saying why can’t Bethesda make say Fallout 5 with id tech and the answer was that it’s good at rendering a series of connected areas, but nothing truly open, and also that it cannot do a persistent world. By that they mean that you cannot use it to make a game like Fallout or Elder Scrolls where you go into a house, move around some cans and shit on a table, leave and come back 6 hours later and everything is where you left it.

Ok that's fair, but I don't give a crap about Fallout... lol

Halo would be a good fit. Some of the levels in Eternal are HUGE.

Even COD would work great... a Warhammer 40K game with that engine would be glorious.

Halo could work but I think it largely depends on what direction they want future titles to take. It’s my understanding that Halo Infinite was “open world” (I haven’t actually played it) so if they want to stay on that trajectory then it wouldn’t make sense to switch to id tech for the reasons I already mentioned.

As for COD, given their development model of having like 3 studios constantly working on a COD project at a time to maintain annual releases I just can’t see them switching to a new engine anytime soon.

And for 40k, maybe some future titles, but I don’t think id tech has the capabilities of rendering big swarms of enemies like what they did recently with Space Marine 2 which had a custom engine for that exact purpose.

Space Marine uses the same engine as the World War Z game ( as in the licensed game for the film of the same name)

Also funnily enough COD's engine was originally based off ID Tech 3 then expanded upon after that

Those games are well optimized, but a lot of this is gamelan choices that aren't possible in all games. For example, Doom's arenas are fairly small and don't require huge amounts of detail (hair, physics, foliage, lighting and shadows for all of it, etc.)

That doesn't excuse other studios of releasing poorly optimised games though. I am not saying it is possible they could all do what ID did/does, but they could still do better with the resources they have.

They can but to put it bluntly, it would never suit COD's needs or that it most AAA titles.

There is that one trick you have to do in urdak that kind of sucks.
The thing is with this game, the developers went ALL OUT on everything in this game. So when they decided platforming would be in it, they pushed it to the extreme. As fuckin over the top as that was, we all managed to get through it, it wasnt somethin no one could figure out how to do.

I was playing earlier and just realized how insane the mindset behind the game was. Take the Doom Hunter stage with the booming music. They hype this boss your gonna fight all through the level, and then when you finally get to him, he's pretty hard.

As soon as you finally beat him they IMMEDIATLEY drop you into another area where the are TWO OF THEM. I just havent had a feeling about games like this since the 80s hahahha

I havent been able to go back to Doom 2016 since Eternal.

I LOVED that game but...

Eternal is that game jacked up on steroids and the rules are so different when it comes to the weapons/enemy types. I am so indoctrinated to the way Eternal plays im not sure I will like going back to that.

I may do it one day though.

I dunno why some of you guys are convinced my idea wouldn't work. As mentioned previously, COD was originally built on id Tech 3. It has been modified to the point where you can't really call it that anymore but that was always the foundation.

We are up to id Tech 7. The levels in Doom 2016 and Eternal are bigger than any COD level. Eternal runs flawlessly on my 2019 laptop powered by a GTX 1060 and intel i7 8750h. I played Borderlands 3 on the same laptop and while it was playable, eventually I went out and bought a gaming rig to fully experience it. I have upgraded that rig a few times and it is what I still currently use.

Several years later I still feel that the games that are powered by id tech are optimized the best.

on a side note I just learned that Tim Willits, former co owner and studio director for id is now Chief Creative Officer at Saber- developer of Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2.

Maybe he didn't want to work under Bethesda? Dunno just speculating.

Anyway I still think it would be interesting to see a game in that universe powered by id tech- while the engine in Space Marine 2 is impressive when you look at activity from a distance, when you get up close to a bunch of enemies it does start to choke a bit.

I have never seen Doom 2016 or Eternal choke

Funny.. a lot of people feel the opposite way. Many swear 2016 is the better game.

I like both, IDGAF.

I absolutley like both. I understand people like the darker tone and usually im one of those kinda guys, who prefer that to the over the topness of DOOM ETERNAL...but in this case... FUCK

Im in awe of the balls of the guys who made this game.

I just want to have Doom guy's wicked sick spaceship SO BAD.
