Don't you appreciate Mike Tyson so much more?

No, I’m glad the UFC HW champ isn’t a manlet like Tyson

Picto trying to work up the courage to fight at HW didn't make me appreciate Tyson more than I already do. Mike was a fucking killer.

Also, GOATs recognize GOATs.

imagine the legend If he was in the 27 club, up there with hendix and bruce lee

Mike's height and reach were more a problem than his actual weight. Those really were a lot to overcome and when he lost just a little bit of his skills he had a very hard time. Fighters like Ali could fall back on their reach/height if they weren't in top shape, Tyson had nothing if he was not in tip top form. In other words, it appears like he had to work very hard, even at his best, to stay ahead of men who were bigger, maybe even stronger but weren't half as fast or skilled, or as he once said when he replied to what made him different, "my intensity". He had to be firing on all cylinders for it to all work.

He may have. I recall him weighing in 212, 217 in his mid 1980s title run.

He was bigger after prison, 230ish

his best weight was likely around 216-217. He fought as an ammie in the heavyweight class which I think was a 201 pound limit. He was also said to have come out of prison as a lightheavyweight, I've never seen confirmation of that statement by a fairly well reputed journalist (Wallace Matthews). If that's true, he really wasn't even a heavyweight.

Marciano wasn't fighting guys the size of Frank Bruno tbf sir.

I don't think Rock ever fought any giants but Joe Louis fought a few and beat them mercilessly, Ali also had an easier time with the longer, bigger guys, even if they had some speed (Bugner,Terrel).

The thing with the more modern boxers of the size of Louis' giants have way more skills and stamina. Tyson Fury is ridiculous and does things I thought I'd never see out of a heavyweight. I always thought that 220 was the optimal weight and around 230 would be the cuttoff, but Fury stands all that on it's head. Of course, he doesn't have the most skilled crop to test him.

Louis is the best hw ever in my eyes.

Jones just looks odd to me sometimes. You know he's good but for some reason his movements always look very lulled like he's leaning back on what he can do. Then there's odd behavior like using eye pokes in place of a jab. Sometimes he neither looks spontaneous or tactful and more like he has a number of preset moves he likes to spam.

VERY different era but yeah, Marciano came in around 185 for his biggest fights.

Marciano would likely have to fight at LHW (175) or super MW (167) in today's boxing world... and he would still have consistent reach disadvantage at those weight classes.

Wilder was 212, then 228 and 237 for the Fury fights.
His best performance was at 212.
Marciano got them godly ankle genetics
it's why he hit so hard
we need ankle measurements brought back imo

Looking how Jones had to beef up 50 pounds over 3 years to fight in the HW division and very few people dare to do this in the UFC,, I appreciate Tyson so much more as small HW who basically weighed in at around 220 on fight night, which is what the LHWs now coming in at. And he fought these guys who were monsters compared to him and KOed most of them.

I personally have a much deeper appreciation for him and still can't think of anyone in combat sports who is more exciting.

He didn't beef up 40lbs goof, he was 248lbs, considering Jones walked around 225-230lbs before cutting weight for most of his career, he might have put on 10lbs of fat and 10lbs if muscle, 10lbs of muscle being a serious stretch.

People don't understand how much 10 pounds of muscle is.

It is an enormous amount of muscle.

People just know nothing about body composition and fitness yet speak on it so much. Like understanding lean mass vs mass, if someone puts on 20lbs and looks more muscular but has visibly less definition...it's safe to say they didn't put on 20lbs of muscle. Someone who adds muscle and then shreds back down to the same body fat % will always look more defined than before too..you have more muscles, they will be visible.

Yup, 10lbs of muscle at Jones stage is probably impossible to put on naturally, the guy has been power lifting for over a decade and relative to his genetics and frame those muscles are probably about as developed as they're going to be. He'd need to be consuming 250g of protein a day, tons of calories, have a very strict lifting and recovery routine and be on some helpful supplements for about 6-12 months to ever dream to put on 5-10lbs of lean mass in his mid 30s as a pro athlete who's been lifting forever.

Is there an actual theory/study to this? Or is it a meme? I'm curious, old boxing fans and trainers love their myths of where power comes from lol.

You're born with power, but you can develop better technique which will help you hit cleaner but not necessarily much harder.

Diego Corrales (R.I.P) is a good example of a guy that didn't "look" like he could hit hard but he did.

"Born with power" sure, I don't disagree but I'm just interested in theories or actual science pertaining to why someone has it. I've heard bone density, developed legs, the way muscles and tendons connect to bones, fast twitch muscle fibers etc etc but none of those hold consistent at all. I also have heard a lot of intelligent people in boxing and combat sports disregard power and contribute it more to technique, timing, accuracy and intention. It's just interesting to hear theories and junk.

Kinda like the ability to take a punch, we know so little about the brain but I hear a lot on it attributed to neck muscles, head size and thickness of skulls sometimes lol.
