The reason for keeping it from him would be plausible deniability.

If it can't be proven that he was directly informed, that's significant in this kind of thing.
We're down to a Bill Clinton style splitting of hairs as to legal definitions. Trump's team has shit the bed.

But then to further this cover the lawyer should be fired. To say his lawyers were informed but didn't tell the President about this issue of his then campaign chair, son and son in law meeting with Russians under the understanding they would get official government dirt on Hillary - that is definitely fireable. To keep him around if that is the official story makes Trump seem okay with being left out of the loop - and even if that is the case, you can't reenforce that idea.

Donald Trump Jr. outright lied about who was at this meeting. Before you point it out, it wasn't illegal for him to lie, and it wasn't illegal for him to have the meeting even with the new contacts, but that doesn't mean you should be ok with him just openly lying on national television. It discredits the entire administration going forward in exactly the same way that CNN constantly publishing and retracting fakenews articles discredits MSM's coverage of the Russian investigation.

Yep. And the narrative shifting from "it's insulting to even suggest that Russia wanted to help Trump and that the campaign had any contact with them" (Conway and Jr. both very clearly made comments along those lines) to "it's no big deal" should send up screaming red flags.

How would people have reacted if Trump said during the campaign, "of course Russia wants me to win. Putin loves America and wants what's best for us. And, yes, my people have been meeting with them to talk about how they can help in the campaign"?
