It's the gap erasing via Mark Carney that I have a hard time believing. I strongly doubt most of the electorate even knows who the guy is but we're supposed to believe he'd somehow just make the gap disappear over night?

I was surprised by the new tariffs as the countries were communicating and Canada agreed to the 10k troops with a fentanyl czar. If it's a permanent thing then I don't support it. Ultimately we are good partners. Goods are similar in cost I think on most things. China I get as even Canada has extra import tariffs on China to protect domestic products like steel. But overall, Trump already got movement on things he wanted and I wish he would just meet and discuss. @cottagecheesefan what's your take? Also, if you are a cottage cheese fan... that stuff is disgusting.

I haven't looked into the tariffs specifically. Only that they got thrown out there. Cottagecheese has been saying that it's negotiations but this doesn't look like it. Just wanted to get his take. I don't know him well enough to know if he trolls at all in here but he had some honest takes on some of the rhetoric.

I think this goes back to what I was starting to say in the other thread prior to both Canada and Mexico agreeing to send troops to the border and there being a pause. But that was blanket tariffs, where this is specific. I am sure he did discuss it with them during their talks tho.

But he said throughout his campaign though that it isn’t just the border, he legit wants to reduce the trade deficit and/or get companies to come to the US to avoid tariffs.

In this case with steel, he specifically mentions car manufacturing where companies move from the US to Mexico, giving them jobs and growth. He wants the manufacturing back. Has been very open about it

Mexico I see but Canada not so much. The trading with Canada is pretty close. Andy's point about a deal with Poilievre may be something. Tariffs on cars made from outside the US makes more sense for Mexico or incentives for domestically manufactured cars no?

This is going to make Grumpy Trumpy wildly popular among his base to start with (the ones that do not understand how tariffs work anyway, but that seems to be most of them). But I wonder how they will feel when the cost starts to filter down to them in the coming months.

My issue with it is how half-assed it can be like in British Columbia. From what little I know of the situation, the Portuguese did decriminalization the right way, creating strong cessation programs and mental health support.

Here, all they've done is try to sequester the problem so it festers and grows. The BC government effectively decided, nah we aren't spending any money on that shit, and dumped the aftermath on the community
