Dogs are smarter than cats, study finds - BS

Show me a cat that can respond to a plethora of commands intelligently and I'll buy that they are smarter. I think their animalistic nature and independence can lead you to believe they may be.

Dogs know what it means when humans point at something.

Not even chimps know what that means.

Cats can learn this too. I've mentioned this before, but some people in here really need to look up Siamese and Oriental cats itt. Extremely intelligent and on the extreme side of social too. They play fetch, can learn commands, get emotional and even talk back when you scold them.. they get compared to dogs by a lot of people because of their behavior. They even learn your habits and take on the personality (in a way) of their favorite person.

They aren't for the faint of heart tho, they're very chatty and very nosey. Owning one basically means you have a side kick every second of the day in your home (if you're the one they choose). They will also do all the shit they know they aren't supposed to do when you're around -like jumping on counters, playing with your shit and knocking it around- but they'll never do it in front of you. They can open doors, drawers, and always know where you keep their toys -they do this strictly off of observation of you too, not training. Very cool animals that I find even 'cat people' don't seem to know a lot about.

Cats are fucking retarded and useless. If you have a cat in your house you probably have toxoplasmosis and your cat is putting sick cat voodoo in your head to make you think you like cats.

Dogs are true companions and an asset to humankind. Dogs save lives in many different roles, from bomb-sniffing dogs to blood-sugar and seizure-sensing dogs to seeing eye dogs and on and on and on. Cats just sleep on your face and try and kill you.

Next thread.

Dogs do it better.

I'm on serious dubs here and I don't know if it would violate some rule on posting violence/gore but go to YouTube and search for Ratting With Terriers.

If you live with a cat inside you're living with the lovely ammonia fragrance of cats shitting and pissing inside your house constantly. After about 4 months a puppy is good enough to not shit or piss in the house, you just let them outside a couple times a day. No big deal.

Cats are fucking filthy. Living with cat shit in your house is disgusting, and you most certainly have to pick it up out of their filthy fucking litterbox which they track cat litter out of and all around the house, covered in cat shit and piss.

It sounds like the toxoplasmosis has gotcha bad, mayne.

we've listened to that JRE podcast too bud, but understand the people in danger of toxoplasmosis are people who have outdoor cats. indoor cats are not in danger of having this disease or spreading it to their owners.

Those are cool too. There are definitely other smart breeds out there as well - the Abyssinian comes to mind, as does the Russian Blue.

We have 2 Russian Blues actually.... Well, maybe one this year - One of them I haven't been seeing around and the coyotes can pick them off if they leave the property. The Blues we have are friendly cats, but also very aloof.

Environment is essential here. Even dogs can be simple based on what their environment is.

I'm talking potential for learning and intelligence. Doesn't sound much like you put time into trying to teach them much, or spend enough time around them to have them observe you enough to learn on their own. Seems like they're outdoors tho which lines up with that.

But if you don't spend time with your dogs and teach them anything they'll seem like idiots too. It all boils down to what you put in as an owner. No different than a child in some ways, actually.

I can tell you as a kid growing up all our cats and dogs learned and understood the same commands, each still had their own quirks and personality of course, but were equal in ability to learn things for the most part. Hell, they even learned from one another too.

Like I said, so much of it comes down to what you invest in them. And there are some breeds that exceed others when it comes to this stuff.

Your full of shit telling me a cat can respond to the quality and number of commands, as a well trained dog.

Like a police dog? No. Like the things you would teach your dog? Absolutely. Fetch, sit, beg, roll over etc. Cats can do stuff like that.

Cats are craftier and more manipulative than dogs. They will figure out how to get what they want. Dogs rely much more on their owners.

The argument is if cats are smarter than dogs, your telling me they can't reach the level of an elite trained dog therefore it's obvious they aren't as intelligent. Look at the video I posted above, that's not even a police dog. Can they do that? If the answer is no then they aren't as intelligent.

Watch the video I posted a few posts up. And post a video of a dog using and then flushing a toilet while you're at it.

Don't be stupid. Cats don't have anywhere near as strong a sense of smell as a dog so obviously they can't be trained to sniff drugs or bombs like a dog can any more than you can. Is a dog smarter than you because they can do this?

So, some wise guy scientists are trying to say that Dogs are smarter than Cats.

I'm calling Bullshit on this. When my Cat finds itself stuck behind an open door, I'll believe it.

Lol stuck behind an open door...cats are smarter. Especially when a cat is an outdoor cat and he has grown up having to think for himself and really use his mind to survive. Those cats in particular are very impressive. Just another reason why I take in strays.

Cats are predators. They are infinitely better hunters.

I think it probably depends on the dog. Some dogs are extremely smart. Some dogs are fucking retarded.

Cats are a little more consistent, but I bet the smartest dog is waaaaaay smarter than the smartest cat.

It is more so that dogs as a social animal are actively seeking positive reinforcement. They are looking to please, looking to be rewarded.

Cats are far more likely to give zero fucks. They are much more difficult to train but not because they lack intelligence simply because they don't fucking care about humans that much.

To a dog you may be their best friend, part of their pack. To a cat you're the goddamn food monkey. Useful for free food and body heat during the winter. Maybe the occasional belly rub. Otherwise you can fuck off and die and they'll eat your corpse when they get around to it.

That being said, I grew up with a cat who could and frequently did open doors by pawing at the knob then pushing his bodyweight into the door. He had far more difficulty with a door that had to be pulled open but he could open any of the unlocked interior doors in the house. Would he do it to please a human? Fuck no.
