Elon is cooking books. He's misrepresenting how much money we're saving. Just recently DOGE claimed that they cut a contract worth 8 billion dollars than was worth only 8 million. We know he's lied about plenty of other stuff too. Do you know how disastrous it would be if they sent Americans 5,000 dollars all based on misrepresented savings from DOGE? It's so incredibly dangerous to not keep track of government spending accurately. Honestly, this could just send us into a another depression. 2. they are already planning on cutting taxes for the wealthy, which will add on trillions in national debt. i dont see how adding on another trillion in debt gonna help with the deficit. i doubt doge is capable of balancing the book with how incompetent they are running things.
3. if their austrian economy process actually work like they are advertising. americans should be well off enough in the future they don't even need government handout. so this idea goes against their libertarian fiscal policy in the first place.

Looks like they are considering a 20% refund to the taxpayer and using the other 80% to pay down the debt. So the $5,000 number may not be accurate, but the principle is sound.

After the Great Recession, Obama (with a republican house) did wrangle the deficit down for a few years in a row before Trump took over. They did it with revenue (taxes) and spending cuts.
So it’s been more like 9 years since congress did anything about it.

Then Trump and congress almost doubled it in a couple of years, then Covid hit and exploded it, then Biden and congress did nothing about it either. So here we are.

And, newsflash, Trump probably won’t lower the deficit this time around, either. DOGE ain’t cutting jack shit compared to overall spending. Just lowering the deficit will require taxation plus spending cuts (Republicans will never raise taxes, though). And a lower deficit is still a deficit, so it still adds to the debt. They’d need a surplus of revenue to reduce it.

Fun fact: 80% of the 36T debt is owned by the public, domestic and foreign . About 20% is owed to government agencies.

Lobbying from those third party tax software companies is basically the reason we still have an archaic and unnecessarily complex tax filing system. Since if it was changed, there would no longer be a need for them to exist.
