After the Great Recession, Obama (with a republican house) did wrangle the deficit down for a few years in a row before Trump took over. They did it with revenue (taxes) and spending cuts.
So it’s been more like 9 years since congress did anything about it.

Then Trump and congress almost doubled it in a couple of years, then Covid hit and exploded it, then Biden and congress did nothing about it either. So here we are.

And, newsflash, Trump probably won’t lower the deficit this time around, either. DOGE ain’t cutting jack shit compared to overall spending. Just lowering the deficit will require taxation plus spending cuts (Republicans will never raise taxes, though). And a lower deficit is still a deficit, so it still adds to the debt. They’d need a surplus of revenue to reduce it.

Fun fact: 80% of the 36T debt is owned by the public, domestic and foreign . About 20% is owed to government agencies.

Obama made a little progress but not much, overall, his administration brought in debt. Bill Clinton was the last person to balance the budget. He did good.

Dodge is a great program and saving money. Very needed. But yes, you are correct. Just because Doge saves money doesn't mean Trump can't waste it elsewhere.

Elon is cooking books. He's misrepresenting how much money we're saving. Just recently DOGE claimed that they cut a contract worth 8 billion dollars than was worth only 8 million. We know he's lied about plenty of other stuff too. Do you know how disastrous it would be if they sent Americans 5,000 dollars all based on misrepresented savings from DOGE? It's so incredibly dangerous to not keep track of government spending accurately. Honestly, this could just send us into a another depression. Whether he is saving 8 million or 8 billion per deal, it is all good. There is a lot of saving going on, which is good.

Yes, wasting all that savings on 5k checks is bad.

I mean, not really. The tax cuts are the big issue, and have lowered our revenue per year by almost 30% each year since 2001.

We have more than enough to do things like war and crisis related stimulus if we just returned tax rates to the levels they were in the 1990s.

Foreign aid has exponential benefit to Americans, improving conditions in other countries allows for a more robust trade environment that we benefit from more than most.
