Does Sterling get the automatic rematch?

Yes. Even then. Love GSP, think he's GOAT at 170 and a P4P great... but I do my best to be consistent with this line of thinking. GSP was the better fighter overall, but Serra was the better man on the night and won the fight fair and square. He shouldn't have had to do it twice right away just to make it "count".

EDIT: As was pointed out below and which I forgot to mention here, GSP doesn't really work as an example... Georges did it right. He beat two legit guys in Koscheck and Hughes after being upset by Serra before getting his belt back.

Please lord, do not make a rematch here. I only ever want to see them when its a close or split decision. If you finish the champ, they should have to fight a top 5 fighter before getting another crack at the belt.

I mean, does that outcome happen more often than not? Probably not. But that doesn't really affect anything; if championships were decided by odds alone we wouldn't bother with fights at all lol. MMA is an inherently volatile sport.

I dunno about the Rose comparison. Weili is great, but she can get hurt, Rose is a solid striker when she's on, and Namajunas has two wins over her now.
 
I hate immediate rematches unless it's a draw or *clear* wrong decision.

That said, even within the modern norm of the challenger needing 7 or 8 wins to "really" win the belt from a champion, it doesn't make much sense. Aljo didn't seem to be a draw, wasn't a hyper dominant champion (although probably the best, marginally so and riding an unusual amount of breaks during his reign), etc...

GSP fought twice before getting a second fight with Serra. Can't recall why Serra never fought anyone in the mean time, but GSP earned his next shot

The Dissolution of Aljo is complete. He shall be brushed aside until he proves himself of further use. That showing against Sean was shameful for the purported "Goat" of bantamweight he really had nothing to offer him.

Yes, he did, which I should have made more clear. I assume Vampire was talking more in hypotheticals using GSP versus Serra as the benchmark of "what about XYZ dominant champ who got caught?" so I answered the premise as such. He could have easily used Nunes vs. Pena and I would have said the same thing. I actually like that GSP did in fact beat two legit guys to earn his way back to the strap, I'm just saying I feel that should be the norm is all.

Serra was hurt. He had a back surgery.

He says he really wasn't even good to go when he finally fought and was never the same, (but at that point if he didn't fight he would have been stripped) which I tend to believe if you look at how he moved prior to GSP1 and in his fights after that.

Iirc GSP fought Koscheck and then beat Hughes for interim title while Serra was out.

That's how it was back then. Lose your title, go beat 2 CONTENDERS. *


Rich Franklin beat Jason MacDonald and then had to beat Ushin Okami in a #1 contender fight to get a rematch with Anderson.


Matt Hughes, even with 5 title defenses had to beat Renato Verissimo, then got to fight for the belt because BJ had vacated.

I thought he dominated cejudo. not sure what everyone else saw i saw 4-1 to sterling with cejudo only winning round 5. but whatevs.

Does aljo take an instant rematch? He promised merab it was his turn after THAT fight is he going to kick his teammate back out?
