Does Sterling get the automatic rematch?

No, and he definitely doesn't deserve it. I don't even like immediate rematches for dominant champions, and Aljo was anything but that. He was dominant against one-armed TJ, but that's literally it. His other two title defenses were controversial split-decisions that could have gone either way. Plus, he won the belt by DQ in a fight he was on track to losing.

No automatic rematch when you get KO'd/TKO'd...

Unless it was like Aldo and happened so fast.

fuck no! it’s perfect time to cut him so he can focus on his acting career.

Not a chance. Its gonna be Chito next. Aljo is most likely having to fight 2 fights before he sniffs another TS considering his relationship with the UFC.

No they are gonna milk Sean as long as they can first fight against Chito if he wins and let’s say he don’t ko Chito because of it being a close fight, they might do trilogy, then he’s gonna fight Sandhagen, then he’ll lose to Merab. I still cannot believe Sean is champ in the most stacked division right now, like imagine telling your past self 24 hours ago that Sean o Malley is the new BW champ of the world by koeing Sterling, this would likely be our reaction

Since the ufc was pretty obviously hoping he'd lose I'd say no
That was probably the most one sided promotion since Nunes vs Rousey.

both times the promotion was almost entirely focused on the challenger and not the champ. Both times the focus was all in on the fighter the UFC clearly wanted to win and the fighter UFC had invested the bigger promotional campaign in to build their name.

He defended the belt three times. In ordinary circumstances I would be for an immediate rematch. But with Aljo, since two of those fights were incredibly close split decisions, I'm not so sure. He didn't really have much dominance as a champion. Very dull, safe style.

I wouldn't be mad if he got the rematch but I'm not sure the UFC is gonna do that. Plus wasn't he talking about moving up a weight class?

I have a feeling, for some funky reason, that Dana will say to merab and aljo “fight each other or one of you has to move up”. Just get that feeling

He'll have to earn another shot. In his case, I imagine it won't be allowed without at least a couple high profile wins. I don't think the promotion will be fast tracking him to a title shot.

Only time an instant rematch makes sense is if there's a controversial decision (ex. Shogun vs Machida)

They need to stop this non sense where you have to beat the champ twice. Even the Edward's/Usman one was dumb to me. Usman should've won 1 fight and then challenged for the title. These rematches keeps the division in limbo for a full year.
It used to be Win 2 fights to get another shot, even for big name champs like Matt Hughes with long title reigns and stars like GSP. Those guys had to go thru 2 top 5 contenders to get another shot, as it should be.

Granted Randy and BJ got front of line passes and title shots coming off losses, but whatcha gonna do?
{<shrug}

If you stop the champ there should be NO instant rematch.

Aljo got shut out and stopped.

Landed zero TDs.
Dropped and stopped on the first decent striking exchange.

That's a wrap.

Go beat a contender or two.
Maybe rematch Sandhagen.

Since the ufc was pretty obviously hoping he'd lose I'd say no

Yup. Same reason Aldo never got an auto rematch despite literally every champ who lost getting one at that time even if they were completely thrashed.

This is literally the Conor-Aldo sequel only with different names involved. Unfortunately Conor is still around and now Ian Garry's another obvious Conor ripoff so now we've got three times as much crap to endure.
