It's been awhile since I've seen it, but my initial thought is that if you think it's over the top unrealistic, that's probably a good thing. It means you haven't been exposed to some of the more heinous shit in this life.

Yeah exactly, I've never experienced rock bottom like that.

I'm changing my score to 9. Now that I was proven wrong.

Prime Darren crafted a masterpiece

Realistic or not it's a superb movie

Holy shit, I forgot how that scene tore at my heart.

Im never lonely so its hard to empathize with how wretched it must feel to carry that feeling every day.

Some people are even saying that we are in the midst of a "loneliness epidemic"

I think modern society can breed a type of existential emptiness that drives vulnerable people to self-medicate in the worst possible way.

Some see the lessening role of religion in the Western World as a sign of advancement, but that scene (imo) encapsulates the reality of what has replaced religion.

meth psychosis is a hell of a drug.

Hubert Selby Junior seems to have had an amazing talent for portraying characters that have to reach up to touch bottom

It definitely is accurate as to the obsession and depravity people have when addicted.

In that scene, the camera bounces right after she says "I'm old" . . . . That bounce was due to the cameraman wiping away a tear after she said it.

I just watched this film after many years not seeing it.

And I didn't realize or remember how extreme the scenes were in this.

I believe it comes off way too excessive in their take, but I could be wrong.

It's a very good movie nonetheless.

Ellen Burstyn is superb, she shows every emotion possible. She should have won an Oscar for this.

And the other cast are just perfect for their roles. No weak link here, everyone did their part.

The score/music totally fits the scenes. Clint Mansell is a genius just for this film alone.

I like this song in particular.

I give this film about an 8.

Its very hollywood in some scenes but if you look at the effects of long term drug addiction its on point. Look at all the cities were dems have allowed free hardcore drug use and prosecution free drug trade. Its like the walking dead show and as dystopian destructive to people we cant even begin to understand if we havent experienced it. People stand and walk around like living corpses and then die at some point with crime rampant. These people loose their humanity.

You have 70 000 deaths alone in 2023 to Fentanyl. Let that sink in! The US has +100k dead via drug overdose / year
To compare that with my Country (80million citizens) we had 2200 deaths of drug use in 2023. I I round that up on US numbers of citizen we would have 10k drug deaths. The US acomplishes more than 10x that. The lenient drug policy changes have wreaked absolute havoc on US society.

I wouldn't say that, you're find countries with far more lenient policies that have far less deaths.......

Its actually probably a bit too strict whilst not being strict enough..... You've got decent border controls and controls on chemicals for manufacturing of certain drugs, that's why you've got problems with people cutting corners to maximise profits...... So your options are go all out and introduce the death penalty for trafficking and start cutting peoples hands off for dealing or you relax the border controls and allow easy movement, majority of OD'ing is caused by containments or quality control of products.

It's a difficult one, you're still not going to stop people doing drugs.....

Go shoot up some heroin or start popping uppers and let us know how realistic it is 😆

One of my all time favorite movies. So damn good.

And Prime Connely is a sight to behold. Unmatched

This movie doesn't age. And realistic isn't a factor for this tale.
