I remember it hit hard when it was released. Guess the effect has probably diminished with age now but still a great film.

As someone that struggled with Heroin addiction years ago I would say it’s a tame example of how the stories of the hopelessly addicted go. The movie is an incredible and gritty display of the underbelly of what can and does happen. Not only was I a Heroin addict but I also now own drug and alcohol treatment centers…I hear horrific stories weekly nothing about it felt excessive to me. Some people’s experiences are not as bad while others are much worse.

It's been awhile since I've seen it, but my initial thought is that if you think it's over the top unrealistic, that's probably a good thing. It means you haven't been exposed to some of the more heinous shit in this life.
