I do think he was faking.
Doesn't surprise me, he's Brazilian. Whether it's PED's, missing weight on purpose, eye gouging, holding onto submissions too long, grabbing the fence, pulling an Erick Silva where you go for the glove touch only to throw a punch instead, etc....Brazilians are habitual cheaters.
And it's not just their MMA fighters, their soccer players dive and play-act all the time. Neymar? Rivaldo? To quote one of their most famous defenders, Roberto Carlos: "It's not cheating if the ref doesn't call it."
My ex brother-in-law was from Chile and he pretty much confirmed that it's South American culture that if you're not cheating, you're not trying. It's not just a thing, it's cultural. And when I pressed him on it he walked away, he didn't want to talk about it anymore.
Seriously, other than JDS (who was clearly on roids once he left the UFC and BKB'd fellow Brazilian roider Wedrum) and Demian Maia, name one high-profile Brazilian fighter who hasn't tested positive for PED's and/or got caught cheating in some other manner? And don't say Jose Aldo, maybe he hasn't tested positive but even Joe Rogan himself has accused him and his camp of juicing.
Bottom line: Brazilians habitually cheat. They like it, they support it, they think if they're not cheating they're not trying. So let me die of not being surprised when a Brazilian fighter faked injury to try and earn a DQ victory.
