What I mean, is the sleeved up, covered in tattoos type opponents, not the small tribal ones around the biceps.

Whenever you spar with someone all tatted up, are you often intimidated?

Just to let you guys know, I AM NOT scared but feel a little intimidated. Not sure is it because of the american culture, Sleeved up tattoos = tough bad asses.

If they are able to handle all that pain, their pain tolerance must be higher than the norm and maybe crazier as well.

Imagine this, you go against this white, shaved haired opponent. Both of this arms are sleeved up. His head and neck have tattoos. He starts looking at you with this crazy look as if he is unsuscepitible (sp?) to pain. (Imagine heavy metal rockers)

How would you take this guy on? Or would you just turn away and ball up in a fetal position?

No.
If you let appearances scare you then you have already been defeated.
Maybe it comes through experience I have trained with guys who look the part but were nothing special.
Ran into guys in life who put on a whole tough image only to crumble when challenged.

I find it's the un assuming guys who are beast.

Well Roger Gracie is not very intimidating.

You have the wrong attitude if you let yourself imitate by little things like this.

As someone who has tattoos - it doesn't really hurt that much -- especially not the meaty areas.

So, no not really. Physique tends to be more intimidating to me than ink.

tattooed opponents no, but some physical attributes may come across as intimidating. The way someone looks or holds their posture can be quite intimidating, but in the fight game this is nothing to go by. I would find someones reputation as a fighter more intimidating then the way they look.
E.g. Anderson silva, does not look scarey, yet arguably p4p toughest guy on the planet.
Fedor - fat bald guy who looks like he doesnt give a crap, yet until recent years dominated everyone. His rep as a fighter was far scarier then his look.

Is this intimidating?

we got a mini version of Jeff Monson at my school (in looks not skills, unfortunately). Some ppl do seem a bit intimidated by him but its the really new ppl and some white belts.

Most ppl dont care. I find it fun to roll with him altho he muscles everything atm i have a feeling he will be a beast in a year.

not at all.

what intimidates me is a person's accomplishments. like if i found out my opponent won the worlds i would get worried.

Some of the most terrifying fighters in the sport's history don't have tattoos. Cro Cop has none that I'm aware of, everyone in PRIDE was terrified of him because he put off the stone cold killer aura. Fedor doesn't have any tattoos either, and again he was one of the most intimidating fighters of his time.

I'm more worried about the guy with no tatts that will stare you down like just another victim as opposed to the inked up guy that wants to get in your face and talk shit.

I don't really notice. I tend to think guys with tons of tattoo are often in BJJ because they think it's trendy (they tend to be the sort that want to 'train UFC'), so if anything I am less intimidated, though I do mentally prep for spazzing and muscling.

Maybe in a street fight or something (actually not even then, alot of regular ass dudes get sleeves now), but definitely not in bjj. Bjj is more of a thinking man's combat sport and the stigma that sticks out in my mind about tatted up people isn't "intelligent grappler".

Some fighters that are covered in tattoos, especially facial ones, would have me question their mental state.

whenever i see a shaved head pasty white guy with tons of tats the first thing that comes to mind is skinhead. it actually kind of makes me mad. i think more racist than i do good grappler

this is it for me, there are guys at my gym who are all tatted up and cant fight for nothin. They do tend to be more aggresive than guys without tats tho.

But for some reason when I get in the cage with someone who weighs the same as me but looks alot more ripped and muscular, that intimidates me more for some reason.

Funny. Back in my school in Paris the guys who had sleeves were often the guys who were into BJJ the longest (off the top of my head, they were all at least blue belts or purple).

only people in toronto with tattoos look like this so hell know its usually a sign your a puss hole

I'm tattooed rather heavily.
I don't want to train UFC, don't think BJJ is trendy and don't spaz and definately can't muscle.

I'm also 5'7 and a featherweight. Appearances can be deceiving.

Not too uncommon that people get tattoo's to make up for something, that's at least how I have seen it. If they are genuine "tattooed thugs" they either let their emotions/aggression control their technique and manners or sometimes carry around quite serious injuries gained in the street.

In my experience the really calm and calculated types are rare to carry around tattoos on their body, you sometimes meet one but quite rare. I've sparred with a couple of juiced guys though but they also let their emotions get the upper hand and gas out or simply opens up a huge window for you to catch.

A super-fast well-trained guy that is constantly several step ahead of you, beating you at all areas is probably the most intimidating I can think of.
