Do you find tattooed opponents intimidating?

i actually think its the opossite, bunch of pussies, trying to be tough

same here... I fight super heavy so I don't get intimidated until we grip up and I think, "oh I got this weak ass" or "oh SHIT this dude is super strong; NEW GAMEPLAN"

tattoos used to intimidate me when i was in high school, but not since then.

as a big pussy with one arm tattoo-ed up I'd have to say no
tattoo's don't add anything really
and it doesn't hurt that much
not like you need some super human pain tolerance
no worse than going to the dentist or something (though you usually don't spend hours on end at the dentist)

Funny. Back in my school in Paris the guys who had sleeves were often the guys who were into BJJ the longest (off the top of my head, they were all at least blue belts or purple).

Real talk.
In my view, the most heavily tattooed grapplers tend to focus on the lifestyle of BJJ more than others. Maybe because we can't get 'real' jobs ;).

As someone who has tattoos - it doesn't really hurt that much -- especially not the meaty areas.

So, no not really. Physique tends to be more intimidating to me than ink.

Some of the meaty areas are absolutely the worst places to get tattooed in terms of pain! :/

And for the several people saying "I have my arms covered in tattoos, it doesn't hurt that much"... well, that's because you only have your arms tattooed. Get some extensive work done on your torso and see how it feels...

Fun fact: One of the most difficult places to get tattooed is the upper belly. Because of this gang members will often have names or nicknames, phrases, etc tattooed there as a sign of toughness and as a way to try to intimidate rival gang members.

But on topic, you shouldn't be scared of anyone covered in tattoos in martial arts.

what the hell does pain tolerance have to do with jiujitsu?

i don't find tattoos intimidating. i have lots of tattoos and intimidating is not an adjective anyone over the age of 10 would use to describe me.

on a related note, i have faced 3 separate guys in grappling matches with tapout tattoos and beaten each one via submission.

Lot of people over 40 or something? Im not intimidated by tattoos and I probably know more people with tattoos than without. It doesn't really mean anything negative or positive, some people just like art on their skin.

I just close my eyes, take a very deep breath and remind myself that that badass, scary sleeve on his arm.............. started out as a stupid, lame tribal band.

Tats don't intimidate me. Big and muscular forearms do.

The one thing BJJ has taught me...is you can't really size people up on looks. The most awkward, skinny guys, flow effortlessly on the mat, the biggest, fatest guys can move surprisingly quick and use their weight perfectly and I've seen the biggest bad ass looking guys tire out and get smashed.

You never know.

Well tattoos go either way for me.
I think it only works well on fit or jacked people, than it adds an air of intimidation. However, especially at my old gym, there were fat, skinny fat people with all sorts of tattoos, but it only seems to make them look more of a joke than really scary.

I'm tattooed rather heavily.
I don't want to train UFC, don't think BJJ is trendy and don't spaz and definately can't muscle.

I'm also 5'7 and a featherweight. Appearances can be deceiving.

Well, it doesn't apply to everyone (like all stereotypes), it's merely a generalization. I have tattoos as well, and I know a lot of guys who train very seriously who have tattoos, sometimes BJJ related. I really only apply my tattoo stereotype if it's a new guy walking into the gym who I don't know and have never seen train before. Obviously if a guy's fighting in the purple belt division or advanced no-gi he knows what he's doing with or without tattoos.

Personally I am more scared of mustachioed men. Anybody can get tattoos, only alpha males can get moustache.

Bur my only submission loss is against a guy who had a giant brass knuckles across his chest, maybe I will get PTSD next time I pull a heavily tattooed guy.

Ahhh this is some classic high school wrestling stuff! When nobody on the team wants to wrestle that crazy looking kid with tats at weigh-ins.

As my old trainer once said.. Tattoos dont make you tough. :) Its something ive seen proven just so many times.

no. the guys who are intimidating are the ones with crappy old gis with brown and black belts that are faded to hell.
