Do you find tattooed opponents intimidating?

I hope people are intimidated. I'm getting my sleeve finished tomorrow.

Well if he had tattoos that you can see while he's wearing a gi that might mean he has neck tattoos, and a lot of guys with neck tattoos have been to prison so maybe just a little bit...

whenever i see a shaved head pasty white guy with tons of tats the first thing that comes to mind is skinhead. it actually kind of makes me mad. i think more racist than i do good grappler

That is just stupid.

And while there are many things that might indicate how much of a badass someone is on the mat tattoos most certainly aren't one of them.

not me, tats are for pu$$ies.

I have a branding=D which has an intimidating factor of +10

Guys, real talk.

I am NOT saying I am scared but a bit intimidated, yes. I know most of us WILL be a bit intimidated, maybe more by others.

TATTOOED not like Eddie Bravo but someone bigger and more scary looking. Not knowing who was better, would you be more intimidated fighting Monson or Brock Lesnar? Sure, Brock looks like a big guy but Monson is just downright, scary.

How about Chris Leben or Anderson Silva? Not knowing their skill levels, who would you think is tougher and more intimidating? Leben just looks like he will eat you alive.

Just saying..

If you're sizing up an opponent in such a way, you're really doing yourself a disservice. Confidence is very important going into any sort of fighting competition, so undermining yourself with those sorts of thoughts is counter-productive. You can't let someone get in your head like that.

Likewise, you don't want to get caught up in thinking about the outcome of the fight. The swings of emotion that come from thoughts about "I'm winning!" and "Oh no, he swept me, I'm losing!" are very dramatic...but in my experience, it's much more effective to remain calm, move & react, and focus on executing your techniques correctly. Often easier said than done, but this is something that is very common among successful athletes...the ability to remain calm under pressure, and the ability to execute things in competition just like they practice them.

Do you clutch your purse when a black man crosses the street too?

You can never judge a book by it's cover, but I do note my opponent's physique (no homo) and game plan accordingly (ex: tall lanky guys and stocky wrestler types).

But back on the subject of tattoos, neck tattoos are definitely higher on the "intimidation" scale than sleeves.

Guy at my gym is tattood head to toe but he is a pussy. Always makes excuses not to roll or train. I think it is his way of trying to look menacing without actually being called upon to be so.

Some of the guys I roll with have full sleeves and more. I don't find them any different than anyone else. Tattoos or not, personalities are there. A couple roll harder than most, but I doubt the ink on them makes them do it.

I have two full sleeves plus I have alot of my upper chest tatted. In two years of training, I have not noticed anybody being any more intimidated of me because of them. Hell most guys don't even mention them, and I have the most tattoos in the class!! As others have said, appearances in BJJ class, or even competition do not really matter, and in my opinion having certain expectations based on a guy's looks does nothing but hurt your own game and mindset.

You are an idiot. I am a shaved head (not to the skin) white guy with lots of tattoos. I shave my head because my hair looks like shit long, and I am thinning around my hairline. Looks much better to me shaved. I am pasty white because I am of Irish and German descent. Get a life you judgemental douche

I clutch my purse, and cross the street. It really unnerves me. But when I get home I take a Hot Shower! Hot Shower! and Ifeel better:icon_chee

Grey belts scare me
Cauliflower ears scare me
Seeing the guy who just destroyed someone that took 3rd in nationals bowing to me across the mat scares me
