I think it’s like many other things. People are born with predispositions toward certain behaviors, but also affected by their environment. The stronger the predisposition the weaker the environmental effects, and vice versa.

But I believe that some people may be born with brain chemistry so fucked up that nothing can be done, and they’ll just be evil no matter what.

Just to add to this I think there is a genetic predisposition to a lot of things besides the topic at hand.

Like addiction to drugs or alcohol.

Your attractiveness towards the person you would be intimate with is something that is genetic. ie. homosexuality.

Mental illness, you can go on and on.

Yes, some people are just wired differently. No, whether they act on it or not is a different story.

Most serial killers have awful parenting, overbearing mothers and physical or sexual abuse but some have very normal childhoods. Jeffrey Dahmer even said there was nothing abusive about his upbringing that made him the way he was.
Highly unlikely, perhaps there wasn't outright physical abuse, and I don't remember the specifics, but the Dahmer household was far from a happy one.

For some this is true, but a smart person with a good heart can fake empathy and live a principled life as though they genuinely possessed true empathy. Problem is that a true psychopath thrives on other people’s misery and actually derives pleasure from it.

In my mind that is evil.

At least he had the courtesy to call 911

<6>

It's a crazy story though. Like WTF went through his mind to decide to do that? His mum and sister loved him and would do anything for him. He even said in his interview he wasn't even angry at them.

Born evil? It's fucking insane to even think about.

Impulsive behavior and cognitive thought of what happen if he pulled the trigger on the fam 🤷

Wow. I'm surprised at the result. It's currently 9 yes, 1 no. The no being me.

I think people are generally molted by their environment they are exposed to. What is acceptable what isn't, actions or thoughts.

Also I might add, doing bad things doesn't necessary make a person evil.
I voted 'no' and agree with everything i say.

I also think your last sentence (which i absolutely agree with) would make for a great thread discussion and some very spirited conflicts.

I don't know anything about his story so i have no real opinion on him specifically.

but for many kids in general, sometimes have an 'ideal' family life, while not ideal at school or with 'friends' can be the trigger. Or they get in to internet rabbit holes. So not 'born evil' but conditioned to it.

I voted no, I think you can be born more likely to be evil but I think actually becoming evil boils down to experiences.

Otherwise it doesn't make sense that there are more murderers in some cultures than others.

Generally they indeed are. But there are outliers. It's like psychopaths whose brains don't produce or process the hormones the right way so they have no empathy.
It doesn't mean that with the right upbringing 99,9% of people can't become decent, but people who are born evil do exist.

Lacking empathy doesn't necessarily make someone evil. It can make it someone more likely to become a serial killer but it can also make them more likely to become a great surgeon.
