Did Ken Shamrock make the most out of his potential?

If I think of the scariest fighter back in the day it would be Ken. His reign didnt last long and thats the main thing that is held against him.

Biggest feat probably his win over Dan Severn. If Im not missing anyone...

Could Ken have trained differently or smarter and made it to Fedor status or did he make the most of what he got?

How good of a submission wrestler was he at his best?
Weren't his biggest wins outside of the UFC?

Choking out dan severn is huge. severn should have just ragdolled him. couldnt get him down a single time.

bas rutten was a killer striker but a beginner at the ground, so not huge wins IMO

Anyone remember the rumored bout between him vs bisping after the final Tito fight? I don’t know how true it was, but a lot of mma sites were posting the bout was rumored, even though Ken retired for about 2 mins after the Tito fight.

Paul harris v1
pretty much. a leglock guy in an era where dudes still didn't know how to defend leglocks. watching him try to strike was always pretty painful. he was a specialist with less than half the game, wouldn't pass muster these days.

I honestly think Shamrock over-achieved. He was lucky to do as well as he did. So yes, he made the most out of his potential.

Should have beaten more people into a living dead

They definitely have their place, and I tend to really like those guys. I liked Coleman a lot too. I just don't view that as a positive trait for a fighter to have. As the great Yogi Berra once said, 90% of the game is half mental.

Overstatement to say they "dont have a fighters mentality". Theres all kinds of "fighter mentalities'. A stoic Samurai or a thrashing Nordic Berzeker can both have fighter mentality that are on opposite ends of spectrum

Shamrock made the most of his potential, financially, by transitioning to pro wrestling…

Why he wasn’t pushed harder in the WWE, I will never understand, but he did have a fan following and mid-card success. They even brought him back as a playable character in the most recent WWE2K game…

I was always rooting for the other guy, but nothing but respect for him. You can’t question his ability to take a beating and, while he usually came out on the wrong side of big fights he rarely disgraced himself.

from a $ standpoint, yes

from a fighting skills stand point, probably not. He pissed away his athletic prime years doin fake wrasslin
