DC knows how to block kicks, that's not the problem. The problem is his high output drains his monumental stamina, and the first thing to go is "fight IQ" so in between chaining together takedowns there will be moments he's gonna stand there with his feet planted, thinking about his next takedown attempt -- and not thinking about the kick he won't see coming until a liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittle too late.

Fedor was luckier because he's a much more scrambly fighter, and even when rocked his instincts and agility and ring-presence would be enough to see him through to victory. This all changed when he exited his prime and was confined to a cage. Not to mention the fighters today aren't afraid of him and are more laser-focused toward victory as opposed to turning fights into slobberknockers.
