But equally so is that they pretend EVERY show is the most important. If they were clear that FS2 was "You can miss it if you're not a hardcore fan", FS1/FOX shows were "Lead Up to Contendership" shows, and PPVs were "Must See Shows".... things wouldn't be so confusing for non-hardcore fans.
 
Don't get why people complain about Jeremy Stephens (3-0 at featherweight) and Nicholas Musoke (2-0) on a UFC Fight Night. It's not like it's Stephens first time.
Also, remember Denis Stojnic? Or Luigi Fioravanti? Jason MacDonald? Jason Black? Cain was 4-0 when he got his first co-main event spot and had only two fights in the UFC (not unlike Rosholt and even less than Soa). All guys that fought in the co main event with 2 (or less) UFC fights (only MacDonald had a winning record prior). Patrick Cote was 5-0 and had never fought in the UFC when he fought the former Light Heavyweight champion in the co-main event of UFC 50.
 
I like Deadspin but I've never seen an mma article on there that isn't just out and out shitting on everything.

Rassling fans didn't seem nearly this confused when they introduced shows like Thunder, Smackdown, WCW Saturday Night, Shotgun Saturday Night, and Sunday Night Heat into the mix. What does that say about UFC fans?

I sort of question the validity of the post I replied to you which caused your reply to me. The spike didnt build stars thing... I think creatively TUF did work, but 10 years later its starting to wear thin and isnt creative anymore.

So I really think there were plenty of stars from Spike, because of Spike and the way ufc promoted Unleashed and the Fight Nights/ TUF Finale's. I;m not saying anything about stacking cards, just merely pointing out that creatively they had a good idea back then of the TV to PPV mentality.

The UFC was thinking of ways to become successful, unfortunately I don't think anyone, including Dana, understands how to run a successful sport or fight company. But they certainly knew how to get it off the ground and running. I think they think that everything they say or shit is gold and their creative juices have been poisoned/ sheltered from criticism and the well of ideas is dried up and stale.

False parallel. The two companies are very different and offer different styles of entertainment.

It's like saying "Why isn't Lingerie Football catching on? American football is so popular."

Rios writes for Deadspin? That guy is awful. I remember when the American Top Team guys talked so much shit about him that it basically ended up getting him fired from Sherdog.

I've seen him post once or twice on there I believe. I couldn't point you to anything specific though. Marchman references him in the article.

We're not comparing the two in terms of entertainment value. I'm simply pointing out that rassling fans understood the tier system and importance of smaller shows. They didn't tune in to WCW Saturday Night expecting Hulk Hogan to be headlining. They watched to see "prospects" like Goldberg build their name.
 
Take yourself back in time when there were only 11 teams and 60 games per team. Can you imagine how watered down and oversaturated it would be if they added 19 more teams, 12 more regular season games, a preseason, a post season, and a developmental league?

There were a few ways it seems people became a star from the Spike Era. TUF was the main way, the other was to be a champion or be a star before entering the UFC like a WWE wrestler, Internet Brawler or former Pride guy. Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, Rampage, Machida, Shogun, Griffin, Evans, Franklin, Silva, Penn, Hughes, GSP... They are all champions.

When the titles were passed around like hot potatoes it help create a lot of stars. Big Nog, Carwin, and Mir all got the interim title. The title passed from Liddell to Rampage to Griffin to Evans to Machida to Shogun in a short amount of time making a lot of stars.

UFC has to have a way other than TUF to make a contender a star before he ever wins the belt. When Edgar first fought BJ Penn nobody gave a shit about him and nost said he didn't deserve the shot. Same deal we just had with Dillishaw. Same thing people initially said about Gustafsson.
