Deadspin: Whatever Happened To The UFC?

Why the outrage? The article is absolutely correct.

The UFC is a steaming pile of shit

A promoter has no reason or ethical imperative to employ such things; it's his job to sell fights and lie. It's the journalists job to research and call him out.

That is idealistic! A journalists job is to write stuff that attracts eyeballs, and write things his bosses tell him to. journalism is a business too.

It's good you could get that off of your chest.

As for me, I like the shit pile that is the UFC. I like their shitty fights, their shitty fighters, and their shitty champions. Hell, I even sometimes get a chuckle out of their shitty commentators and their shitastic president.

over the course of decades, no. Would that be one of many differences between the two? yes

Yes. But growth can vary depending on the talent pool. In the first handful of years, there weren't a lot of MMA fighters. Remember when there weren't enough sub-155 fighters to justify a LW division? Now, it is arguably the division that is richest with talent. That's because over the last 20 years, it has grown that much.

Also, the UFC's growth is really more akin to adding the NBADL. The growth hasn't been at the PPV level. Consider that there are less PPVs than there were during the peak years of '09 and '10. But the divisions have doubled. So that is double the champs and double the contenders. The bulk of the roster increase is to fill the increase in Fight Night cards. Fight Night cards have never been about the best fighting the best. It's always been about showcasing TUF talent and farming prospects.

So what the UFC has done is more like adding more D-league teams/players and slightly decreasing the teams/games at the NBA level, yet still doubling the amount of upper tier elite talent.

People just seem offended by a show designed to showcase prospects increasing the number of prospects.

Deadspin: Whatever Happened To The UFC?

Huh, I could have sworn the UFC was still around. Guess I'm just imagining things.

I agree. That is why I watch it and come here and talk about it daily. NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, etc. are all garbage too. I hate all of the prospects, rookies, and sub-par talent they force on us. I would rather go watch semi-pro. It's a much better product.

A journalist's job is to collect and report news and information. This guy is an editorialist which means what he is writing is not news or information, just simply his opinion.

We wanted more MMA and now we have it .

Yet, thats not good enough. If you enjoy the sport and you are willing to spent your money, then so be it. If you aren't then don't. There's no need to whine about the very thing you asked for in the first place.

But why? Wouldn't you just watch the ones you are interested in and then be indifferent about the others? What exactly is the complaint?

Most fans do not bitch about too many bowl games. People complain about pretty much anything, so I am sure someone somewhere is complaining about that, but most NCAA fans are smart enough to watch the games that interest them and ignore the others..

Editorial writing is part of journalism...

His metaphor is a flop. All pro sports have farm systems, and people support and watch those teams. Why would that be any different than the UFC? And impressive records aren't what make good cards. Anderson Silva and GSP are the two most dominant fighters in history and I have all but fallen asleep during some of their fights.

They keep those players 100% segregated in separate leagues. You don't pay $500 to see the Yankees and end up with half the innings played by the Rail Riders.
