Deadspin: Whatever Happened To The UFC?

Excerpts:
Tim Marchman

Imagine if the NBA added 30 expansion teams over the next two years, and then sent out a favored reporter to lecture the public about how true fans should appreciate the diminished quality of play. This sounds impossibly stupid, and yet it's more or less what's happening in one increasingly dim corner of the sports world.

This Saturday, the UFC will run a card in Auckland, New Zealand, to be broadcast on their online subscription service. The main event will feature New Zealander James Te Huna, who's lost two straight, and Nate Marquardt, who's lost three straight; the rest of the card isn't much more inspiring.

Also this Saturday, the UFC will run a card in San Antonio, Texas, to be televised on Fox Sports 1. The main event will feature Jeremy Stephens, a featherweight with a 10-8 UFC record best known for once having been arrested the day before he had a scheduled bout, leading to thankfully failed negotiations in which promoter Dana White tried to convince the Hennepin County sheriff's office to let the guy out of jail just long enough for him to fight. The co-main event will feature Nicholas Muskoe, a welterweight so obscure he doesn't even have a Wikipedia page.
You can tell this is a live issue because Kevin Iole

yup. cards are still filled with names people dont know.

pretty soon it'll all be over cuz people are finally starting to train GLORY instead

Deadspin is liberal media trash but this isn't TOO off. Although, in the UFC's defense, they've sorta changed their stance from "you need to watch this" to "pick and watch whatever you want".

Doesn't present the clearest picture of the Stephens situation, either through sloppy research or to further his own opinions. Because of that, and the author's butthurt tone, it reads more like a sherdog post than legitimate journalism.
Overall a shitty article, in spite of an easy batch of targets.

Also, calling out yellow or purchased journalism, while not adhering to accepted journalistic guidelines destroys your credibility on the topic.

He was 16-3 overall going into that fight.

He has a record of 7-5 since that fight.

Well he's 3-0 at 145 and 2 of his losses at LW were to the champ and Cerrone.

Swanson vs Stephens looks like a great fight on paper, the whole FN card looks pretty good to me.

Whatever happened to the UFC? Tim Marchman blew a bunch of cans.

Football fans dont complain about watching a division 2 game. NHL fans don't complain about watching a OHL game...

The UFC is shite nowadays... Can't believe people still pay for some of the garbage they put out.

This is 'dead' on.

100%, he actually got me to side with Kevin Iole.

What are the journalistic standards they aren't adhering to? I'm legitimately curious.

And why is it that Deadspin seems to be the only outlet that has the balls to call out the UFC, everyone else seems too afraid of having their credentials revoked to say anything remotely negative.

I couldn't agree more with the point on oversaturation, it really is diminishing the products value and it's representative in overall interest, which is undoubtedly waning amongst casual fans

The "watering-down" of PPV's is a discussion worth having. The merits and cost-value of Fight Pass are still undecided.

But you people that complain about free cards are children.

A lot of us have been saying this for a long time. Im not sure how you can argue against what this guy and many people think but rest assured people will come in here trying it.

They don't employ a legitimate and fact checking department, and their sources read more like heresay. It's generally just an opinion forum of bloggers masquerading as writers.
