Notes: I had a hard time pulling today. For the past month or so, I've been using a DOH grip and my form felt amazing. Today, the weight started to get heavier so I had to switch my grip to mixed grip and my form felt TERRIBLE! Back was rounding, I felt off, and weak. On the last single, I pulled 210 DOH which is a PR but it started to slip. Steve was trying to get me to use hook grip but I felt like it wouldn't be a good idea to switch to hook in the middle of a heavy work set. Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?

For me overhand or mixed grip does not noticeably affect my back. Even left or right overhand doesn't matter much. Maybe it's because I do both pull ups and chin ups equally? Or maybe it's a flexibility issue in your shoulder?

Grats on the wedding btw

A theory is that when my hands are in a DOH position, I can round my upper back more easily and keep my lower back flat. I don't know...

and thanks!!

Congratulations on the wedding. If I ever get married I'd want it to be outdoors as well. It was stunning, as were the bride and groom!

Thanks! Having it outdoors was really nice, and you'd think it'd be less stress but it turned out to be the opposite. We were on the property of a state park and had to follow a lot of BS rules like no alchohol, have to be off the property by 5pm, and have to provide a tent with a permit blah blah. It was a lot of work and would have been much easier to have it at an indoor venue, but I'm glad we did it outside. It was PERFECT weather thank goodness and everything worked out the day of. The planning was just hell though!

Prowler + 25lbs
6 runs in total

Notes: A frustrating training session. My deadlift form is a little wonky lately and I tried to switch to hook grip. It was all fine and dandy until I got to my heavy work sets. I missed my first set completely, then switched to mixed grip for a double. Form felt too sloppy so I backed the weight down and went back to hook.

Prowler runs then knocked me on my ass. Literally, I had to lay down because I felt so sick. NEVER AGAIN.

If it helps, I can't feel comfortable pulling sumo with mixed grip. I've found a solid hook grip, as well as doing really heavy rack pulls have helped me with grip issues.

A little late, but congrats on the wedding.

I know a few lifters who prefer hook grip for various reasons. I've done both, and while I like not having my thumbs squeezed between a heavy barbell and my fingers, doing mixed grip work eventually results in one of my obliques feeling tight and achey. In my experience, it's a matter of getting used to it, and then sucking it up on the odd day where, for whatever reason, it feels more uncomfortable the usual.

hmm, thanks for the input guys! I don't really know what my plan is now. I have a meet coming up in a month and feel some pressure to keep training heavy but my grip conundrum is causing me to rethink my next few deadlifting sessions. I might just pull a token deadlift and try to get a bench and squat PR this meet. I dunnnnnooooo
