Deadlifts and milkshakes

dude, dude, I don't train my press and it's the saddest sh*t ever. I'm embarrassed to have anyone see it. I give you massive props for training it (I mean, ok, it's part of the competition, yah) as I find it a very technique-driven lift that probably takes as much time to master as bench. And we know how much commitment it takes to master bench (I imagine I'm roughly 5-10 years off from getting closer to this) so...so you are doing a good job because you're doing it, so there.

And I definitely see the reasoning re: your squat stance so carry on. I had forgotten about the hip issues. Maybe some mobility work (agile 8 et al) might help to correct some of it?

Haha thanks. It definitely is a very technical lift. I know I'm strong enough to press more but my worm body just doesn't want to cooperate.

Nice pics!
And great going on the volume PR!

Thanks Mr. Nurse!

Ouch, Bench right after press... I've had to schedule these two on seperate days because I get shoulder aids from Pressing!

And for the record a 5lb increase on the Press can be a killer...

I actually really like pressing overhead before the bench. I press so freakin light that it can't possibly make me too tired for benching haha I feel all warmed up and ready to go.

And as for the press max goes, I am fine with not making 5 pounds progress quickly. What is most frustrating to me is how inconsistent it is. One day, I can easily press 70 and the next day I will fail at 60. Its always a surprise when I go to press.

Okay, here is an idea of what my attempts will be this Saturday.

Squat
155
175
180/185

Press
60
70
75
^^just pretend you don't see this part

Deadlift
235
255
260/265

The openers are a *bit* heavy I think and I might adjust day of depending on how my warm ups look. I'm open to suggestions.

Crossfit Harrison, Co-ed Crossfit Total Competition

Steve and I competed in a co-ed competition today. There were three weight classes: lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight. Winners were made based on their combined total of the squat, press, and deadlift.

WC's Attempts

Squat
155
170
180 (+10 PR)

Press
60
70 miss
70 (miss according to the judge, but I'm counting it).

Deadlift
225
250 (+5 PR)
265 (+20 PR)

So first off, as you can imagine, Crossfit does not how to hold a competition. Today was a complete joke and I very quickly became less nervous about it when I realized how ridiculous it was.

We got there around 8:45am and the gym was FREEZING. You could see your breath when you were talking to people and there was no sign of anyone turning any heat on. I was getting a little concerned during warm ups for squats because my hip flexor was really bothering me. Luckily, I came prepared with warm pants and a sweatshirt and had to lift in that to get warm. Still, my toes were numb.

The 'heats' that everyone was placed in were organized first by their weight class (lightweight, middleweight, etc.), then by who signed up for the competition first. I thought this was the biggest flaw in the competition. There was no progression from lift to lift based on the weight on the bar, so it was constantly being changed down and up and down and up, instead of just moving up. They were very unclear about their rules and people were really confused. 5 racks were set up for squatting and their were 5 judges at each rack. When I started warming up for the squats, they told me that I would wait to lift until ALL men had completed all of their lifts. So, I slowed down and stopped warming up thinking it would be a while. About ten minutes later, the judge four our rack says, "Oh, woops, you're going to squat right after the men." So, I had cooled down already and had about 2 minutes to start lifting my opener. I somehow pulled it together and managed to squat a +10 PR with 180. It was the hardest squat of my life!

Press went as expected. I matched my PR and it was embarrassing. The judge didn't technically count my last lift because I didn't "control" the weight but I locked it out and then stepped forward for a second. I'm counting it.

Deadlift
Again, very little warm up because of the confusion. I was warming up working up to heavy singles. I pulled 205 very easy and then Goon came running over to tell me that they were waiting for me. I had 90 seconds to get my opener done. I pulled 225 with about 20 seconds rest from the last heavy single! It moved quickly so I went for a +5 lb pr and got 250. Then went balls to the wall with 265.

Judging was very, very lax for the deadlift. I'm not sure my 265 would have passed at a USAPL meet but it was at least better than the others. People were hitching and ramping like crazzzayyy. But don't you dare take a step on your press! lol

Also, there were NO SPOTTERS for anything. Not even the squat. It was terrifying. I'm so surprised no one left with an injury.

Overall, it was a very successful meet for me. I went 8 for 9 and set some awesome PRs for myself. Goon and I placed second in our weight class and all of my teammates placed as well. My crossfit total is now higher than my most recent powerlifting total which means when I compete with the bench, I'll be putting up a nice total for myself.

And for anyone who doesn't want to read the novel I just wrote, here's it in video form.

Did you kill it yesterday? Why yes, yes you did. And to be able to hit PRs in that kind of environment is a testament to your RAW POWER!!!

1. You did fantastic.

2. Never do a competition with these guys again.

My next full meet was scheduled to be in about a month but I'm feeling pretty burnt out. I've been training very hard and really pushed it yesterday. I decided to sign up for bench only instead and try and get a big bench PR. I need to give my hip a little rest from heavy squatting.

After that, I'll hopefully be doing my first bikini competition in May. I probably won't train much differently but I will be adding an extra pulling day (arms day!) and will be doing some heavy ab and glute work. Yeah, it's silly and I honestly am not a fan of prancing around in a bikini but there are several reasons why I'm deciding to do this.

1) I need the motivation to take care of my diet. I've been A LOT better than usual. My meals consist of mostly eggs and chicken now and more leafy greens. But I really want to truly understand how food affects my physique and training. Knowing that I'm going to be in front of people will help me stick to this.

2) Eventually, I would like to start training people, especially women. And a lot of women in my life have not been keen on asking me for advice because I'm a 'powerlifter.' I want to prove that heavy strength training is where its at if you want to change your physique. I'm not exactly the best role model sometimes when I'm scarfing down cheeseburgers and milkshakes

3) I want to be a well-rounded athlete and I'm going to dabble in this part of training to see what I learn.

Join me, ridicule me, it's all good :)

Good shit, WC.

I felt similarly after December 1st's gym meet. Had been pushing myself really hard in training for a span of a few months and after the comp my CNS just sort of went on strike for a while. Was fine for it after a couple of weeks.

I bet goon won't mind you putting in the extra glute work.

Yeah, this is typical for me. I don't usually have meets this close together for a reason. I get tired just thinking about having to do another max squat attempt.

lol, somehow I knew you would comment on this.

I see bodybuilders as athletes too. They work way harder than me in certain aspects.

Notes: Very informative write-up and an obviously very important day. I just wanted to get some blood in my legs. Not ready to go heavy just yet. My back has been bothering me a little from the competition. I'll be back at it by this weekend.

I don't really understand why you'd go out for bikini versus, say, even fitness, or definitely figure. Muscle mass is kind of at a minimum for bikini. If you're going to do hypertrophy work, why not do enter a competition in which you actually need to develop more muscle mass in order for you to gain an advantage as an athlete for other activities, like you want?

In the long, long run, I might consider doing fitness or figure. The competition I'm prepping for is in May and I know what I'm capable of doing by then. I've done a little research to see what each division looks like and I don't have enough time to put on enough muscle for figure. Bikini is me getting my feet wet and seeing if I like it. If I find that I like it, I might continue and work towards another division in the future.

Also, not all bikini models have low muscle mass. This is Nathalia Melo, who just won the Arnold.
