Crossfit Harrison, Co-ed Crossfit Total Competition
Steve and I competed in a co-ed competition today. There were three weight classes: lightweight, middleweight, heavyweight. Winners were made based on their combined total of the squat, press, and deadlift.
WC's Attempts
Squat
155
170
180 (+10 PR)
Press
60
70 miss
70 (miss according to the judge, but I'm counting it).
Deadlift
225
250 (+5 PR)
265 (+20 PR)
So first off, as you can imagine, Crossfit does not how to hold a competition. Today was a complete joke and I very quickly became less nervous about it when I realized how ridiculous it was.
We got there around 8:45am and the gym was FREEZING. You could see your breath when you were talking to people and there was no sign of anyone turning any heat on. I was getting a little concerned during warm ups for squats because my hip flexor was really bothering me. Luckily, I came prepared with warm pants and a sweatshirt and had to lift in that to get warm. Still, my toes were numb.
The 'heats' that everyone was placed in were organized first by their weight class (lightweight, middleweight, etc.), then by who signed up for the competition first. I thought this was the biggest flaw in the competition. There was no progression from lift to lift based on the weight on the bar, so it was constantly being changed down and up and down and up, instead of just moving up. They were very unclear about their rules and people were really confused. 5 racks were set up for squatting and their were 5 judges at each rack. When I started warming up for the squats, they told me that I would wait to lift until ALL men had completed all of their lifts. So, I slowed down and stopped warming up thinking it would be a while. About ten minutes later, the judge four our rack says, "Oh, woops, you're going to squat right after the men." So, I had cooled down already and had about 2 minutes to start lifting my opener. I somehow pulled it together and managed to squat a +10 PR with 180. It was the hardest squat of my life!
Press went as expected. I matched my PR and it was embarrassing. The judge didn't technically count my last lift because I didn't "control" the weight but I locked it out and then stepped forward for a second. I'm counting it.
Deadlift
Again, very little warm up because of the confusion. I was warming up working up to heavy singles. I pulled 205 very easy and then Goon came running over to tell me that they were waiting for me. I had 90 seconds to get my opener done. I pulled 225 with about 20 seconds rest from the last heavy single! It moved quickly so I went for a +5 lb pr and got 250. Then went balls to the wall with 265.
Judging was very, very lax for the deadlift. I'm not sure my 265 would have passed at a USAPL meet but it was at least better than the others. People were hitching and ramping like crazzzayyy. But don't you dare take a step on your press! lol
Also, there were NO SPOTTERS for anything. Not even the squat. It was terrifying. I'm so surprised no one left with an injury.
Overall, it was a very successful meet for me. I went 8 for 9 and set some awesome PRs for myself. Goon and I placed second in our weight class and all of my teammates placed as well. My crossfit total is now higher than my most recent powerlifting total which means when I compete with the bench, I'll be putting up a nice total for myself.
And for anyone who doesn't want to read the novel I just wrote, here's it in video form.
