Deadlifts and milkshakes

BJJ (1.5 hours)

Drilled the same stuff as this weekend

Rolled with Briana, only one round. I'm really trying to focus on my flaws and see where I am screwing up with her. It seems my biggest mistake is I relax while someone is passing my guard and just let them do it and then start moving. She submitted me with a triangle from side control.

I am improving on my submission defense though. Got caught in a tight guillotine and used a defense that I learned a while back and actually got out of it.

I was starting to feel like I was overdoing the training and needed a break but I've been tweaking my diet. Actually completely revamping my diet. Eating more protein and veggies, eating more frequently and controlling my caffeine/sugar intake. I already feel better.

BJJ no-gi 2 hours

LOTS of warm ups. Running, break dancing, high knees, shrimping, etc.

Spent about an hour on guard passing and reguarding. Definitely learned a lot today just from the critiques I got. I need to stay tighter, and even learned the option of taking the back. So basic, yet no one ever taught it to me I don't think.

Rolled with the ULTIMATE neck cranker. He pulled me in his guard and squeezed the shit out of my neck and contorted/cracked my spine. I told him that wouldn't work and he said it was the "sleeper hold" I now understand why my instructor usually puts me with blue belts. I'm hurtin'

Rolled two more rounds with slightly more experienced people. Learned a defense to the sit through from side control. Get the other under hook.

I'd really like to learn more subs from mount. I think people are getting used to my armbar game from high mount.

FINALLY got the energy and time to get to the gym today.

Had a bad start though. My stopwatch ran out of battteries, bitch at the front desk refused to let me in because I didn't have my I.D., walked all the way home to find out I was locked out of my house, jump rope broke, failed my PR goal for pressing. Surprisingly I still made it, pfew!

Warm-up - walking back and forth my house, obviously had to skip jump roping

Static Stretching

BJJ tonight....gonna suck after doing all of this! After all of that effort I put into that schedule, I had to change it. It is impossible for me to lift 3x a week, so I'm going to do a two day split and take Tuesdays off completely. I sacrified Judo since I really don't see myself making much progress going only 1x a week.

BJJ no-gi 1.5 hours

Drilled defenses from the armbar. My instructor emphasized stacking when youre getting armbarred, and posturing up with the trangle. Sometimes I would make the mistake of pulling my arm out when I was getting armbarred making it more painful.

Rolled a little. Put very little effort, there was no one my size or skill level and I just didn't feel energetic.

Short write up today, my housemates are bothering me to play halo.

BJJ (No-gi)

Learned a new takedown. I only know two and I was getting really bored with them. It was called the "tree top." I like it, seems like it'd be hard for me to get on bigger guys though. In order for it to work, you have to scoop a leg and get it high so the person feels stretched out and just falls back.

New technique: getting the sit through into judo control from the side, figure 4 the legs around opponents arm. Various positions to submit using your feet to armbar depending on whether the arm is bent or straight or tucked between your legs. If that fails, keep that control and keylock the other arm or choke using the forearm and making a "swoosh" I don't know the actual names for any of these submissions since he said them all in Japanese.

Rolled with Briana. Got a guillotine within 4 seconds of the round. I am having trouble taking her down because she walks away from me and I tend to walk in, and she grabs a leg but I slapped on a guillotine right away. Got taken down again, passed guard using a new pass I learned a few days ago, got to the set up that I learned today. Went for the armbar, lost it. Went for the keylock, lost it. But I maintained position and didn't get submitted for once!

Rolled with my friend Chris and I was doing well but then my knee suddenly popped out to the side. It was pretty painful and scared the shit out of me. I stopped and iced it on and off for the rest of the night and it's not really bothering me right now, there's some slight discomfort. I am really hoping I wake up tomorrow and don't notice any pain.

Friends are here for the weekend for Halloween festivities, probably won't train again until Monday if all goes well with the knee.

Happy Halloween!

Might have torn something in my knee a few days ago. Gonna wait it out for the next few days and see if its serious enough to get an MRI. They're probably getting annoyed with me at the Imaging office. Until then, time to be a bench monkey again!

Body weight = 133 This the most I've ever weighed but I have very little body fat. Gettingg jackkkkkkked.

Knee still feels tender and somewhat wobbly. Not a good sign, afraid I tore my MCL. A few more days of rest and if I'm still uncomfortable, might schedule an MRI.

Watched BJJ today just so I could see the techniques being taught. It was really hard to be there and not be able to do anything and I really questioned whether or not I should stick with it. I love jiu jitsu and have never devoted so much of my time to anything in my life but it's been exceptionally hard on my body and I don't want to be crippled for the rest of my life.

I am either going to have to stop the bjj and stick with lifting, or accept the fact that injuries are going to happen and deal with them. For now, I am just going to watch the techniques, overload on cissus/ice/rest and hope for the best.

hurrhurrhurr you almost weigh as much as me! I gotta go inject more food! (i lost a ton of weight due to the stress of exam week =[ )

I don't think you tore your MCL simply because you said you weren't excruciating pain or crutches the day immediately after. I sprained my MCL pretty bad and was literally unable to walk the very next day; was on crutches for 2 days thereafter.

Don't quit. Do yoga. Take naps, eat smart, take hot showers or ice baths. Don't go 100% every time you roll...or rather, roll with people who don't try to destroy you. Have an equal balance of drilling and rolling to maximize the efficiency in your mat-time. I follow that regimen and it allows me to train 9-12 times a week virtually injury free (though I'm not lifting or anything).

Yeah, please do inject more food. No guy should ever weigh the same as me.

That sounds relieving. I pretty much self diagnosed from google (always a good idea lol) I'm just hoping its nothing and I can just take two weeks off and be fine.

Thanks for the encouragement. I am sure I won't actually quit, I am way too obsessed. 9-12 times a week?? I thought I went a lot!!! I'd love to train that much.

yea yea, I\m back up to 140 now so shush!

I completely agree with you, don't quit but try to take a week or two off and just not do any kind of working out, i know that will be super difficult, but health first!

Get better soon mang. Listen to Arun, he gave sound advice. If you're going to be in BJJ for the long haul (10+ years) you're pretty much always going to have something in pain, or not working 100%. Little/medium/big injuries come with the territory.

Exactly why Im feeling hesitant. I initially started doing all of this stuff to ease my daily body pain, not realizing that my life would BECOME pain. Oh wells, no worries my friend. Like I said, I'm way too obsessed to let this injury stop me.

BJJ Club

Went to the BJJ club today and watched the technique. An armdrag, kick your opponents knee out, get a hook in and take the back.

Did some push ups (5 x 3), hip circles, and some shoulder exercises (putting my hands flat and pulling myself across the floor) I had to keep myself somewhat sane while everyone else was training. A lot of the girls at the club started to gather around me, I guess they're getting lazy with jiu jitsu and it's turned more into a social event. I guess it's a college club, had to expect it.

Knee feels really funky today. It feels weakened and somewhat throbbing.

Just got back from the doctor regarding my knee. I received the disheartening news that I did in fact tear either my MCL or PCL. She did some (painful) tests that showed how much more wobbly my right knee was and the pain I was experiencing suggested a tear. Still need an MRI to see the severity of it, which should be soon.

I'm gonna need a big tub of ice cream for this.:icon_cry2

That sucks to hear about your knee, damn ligaments. I'm personally a fan of Ben & Jerry's Half Baked ice cream for times like these.

Sorry to hear about the knee news. Work on getting a killer grip if you are out of commission for a bit.

Thanks guys.

Oblivian, I've been trying to think of ways that I can keep myself sane during the healing process. I completely forgot about grip stuff. I'm hoping that I can still do pressing/pulling stuff too that won't require too much leg drive, but I'm going to wait for my first physical therapist appointment to make sure.

Woah WTF! That's terrible news. BUT-

One of the best guys I've ever trained with, fellow sherdog-BJJ-training-log-writer TrumpetDan had like 2 knee surgeries...and he came back hard and strong. And that dude's beastly!!!

Also, Romulo Barral (BJJ legend) had knee surgery as well...so don't get too down! You can still fullfill & exceed your potential on the mat even when you're injured!

Yeah I'm pretty sure every successful grappler has SOME kind of knee problem. I talked to my instructor and he has completely ruptured his ACL and tore his lateral meniscus and has had two knee surgeries in his jiu jitsu career and he just got his black belt a month ago.

I know I'll be fine. Just really, really ancy until I can get back.

BJJ Club

Tightened up my knee brace, put on my gi and learned some gi chokes! Variations of the cross choke from open guard and a few from back mount. These don't irritate my knee at all so I'll be working these a lot.

Also, watched the class on butterfly guard and scissor sweep.
