The democrats wants this to try and shift the balance.

where will they put the extra star? US flag is pretty crowded already.

They're already part of a state so they get a say in who the Senators are.....DC residents don't. They're being taxed without representation so to speak.

easy solution.join maryland or virginia where much of the federal employees live anyway

what’s the benefit of making it a state ? Only 700k people live there

larger population than Wyoming and Vermont. It’s OK with you that 700k don’t have representation? Only if it’s a left leaning area with a large population of minorities, huh?

Is DC really big enough to be its own state?

1. Unconstitutional

2. Giving DC state powers on top of the powets it already has would be fool-hardy

3. Unconstitutional

15-20% of the population has 2 residence; if not 2 countries.

Yea, I can definitely see points that a capital works much differently than a state and that territory does have its own power in indirect ways.

Puerto Rico be like

Only passed the House but worth noting as it's the first time this has ever passed. It would still need to go through the Senate and President so at the moment, it's probably dead. Not sure if Pelosi is allowed to hold onto it until 2021 to send it to the Senate but either way, Dems would need to win the Senate, expect a consensus majority there. It looks like the President might not be involved in this process at all.

House approves Washington, D.C., statehood in historic vote

Washington, DC is the capital city of the United States and obviously not a state. It is declared as such in the U.S. Constitution. The House's vote to make it a state was therefore unconstitutional. It is all just a power grab by Democrats, and if they had the Senate as well the legislation would have been challenged in the Supreme Court.

Democratic power grab.

Democrats be like, "Two more Senate seats? Yes please."
Republicans have always been against representation for people they don't agree with. Which is what you are mirroring here. The people in DC have no representation, and you are advocating they don't deserve it because they aren't Republicans.

As someone already mentioned, it's unconstitutional because the land DC is on can't be a state. So it would require a 2/3 vote of the house and senate which would never happen. So it would just go to the courts and get struck down by the conservative SCOTUS.
