Dave Chapelle's Standup Comedy is Ridiculously Overrated

Dave's stuff has aged like few have. Chappelle show and killing them softly are 20 years old yet still hold up. Not to mention his highly underrated hbo half hour.

Dave is only overrated now if you compare him to his earlier work.

^ TS are you one of these two "women"? If so, you were really laughing up a storm until he made fun of trans people.

I do think this recent DC hate is by LBGTQP+ people and their sheep. Before getting shit for daring to make a joke about them he was all loved.

DC is the best comedian hands down right now. He also says whatever the fuck he wants. He is not George Carlin but to me he has taken the spot GC has left.

His last special was funny as fuck. I got into DC when Half Baked came out and that movie is one of the best comedies every made.

You wonder what kind of generic field of douches hate on DC. I say it is weak bitches that have been propagandized into hating DC by the LBGTQP+ lobby.

Aw....he made fun of the "wrong" people. deal with it. It is a fucking joke.

Sticks and Stones was funny too.

DC is the comedian of my generation...and one of the only ones that haven't sold out and apologized for some dumb ass shit.

This new Netflix special is the weakest to me because it retread the exact same material as his previous two specials. I think he got too overly defensive about woke people criticizing him and the comedy suffered. He needs to find some new topics.

Think of your all time favorite comedians.

Got 'em?

Okay, now point to their small handful of specials that gave you that impression, and realize that they all have a bunch of forgettable shit they put out that you can barely remember. Chappelle is no different. He just has a bigger magnifying glass on his work. Like, George Carlin and Richard Pryor have a bunch of specials. You likely only remember bits from a small portion of them. There is no such thing as the "perfect" stand up comedian. Like any other acts across all mediums, they are enshrined in greatness by their best work. Not ALL of their work.

<WellThere>

I never got the hype behind his standup. Chapelle Show is classic, and Half Baked was a good stoner flick, but his standup(that I've seen) has been pretty garden variety.

I think most of the hype was born out of The Chapelle Show. I don't recall anyone ever talking about him as one of the best prior to that.

I get what you are trying to say, but I don't think it pertains at all to how I feel, and my feelings expressed in the OP.

Like I said, strictly talking about standup, Dave's work has never stood out for me. Richard Pryor and Carlin have given me great memories of laughter from their stand up acts that I could immediately recall upon. This is definitely a personal opinion but Dave has never done that for me in the past with his standup. I'm not looking for perfection.

Now his show on Comedy Central and even some of his movie roles are immortalized in my mortal brain. Plenty of classic moments for me.

But standup wise, I could name at least 8 black comics who are not only better stand up wise, but arguably have a greater body of work. That is not counting comedians of all other races.

I say he is overrated because when someone like Damon Wayans challenges Chapelle to a versus, he gets shitted on by this generation.

EXACTLY!!! People were shitting on Aries Spear for saying that black people didnt fuck with Dave on this level before the Chappelle show but it was true.

Richard Pryor
Red Foxx
Eddie Murphy
Bernie Mac
Chris Rock
Even Martin Lawrence.

Nobody was putting Chapelle amongst them before the Chapelle show but people are dick riding calling him the Goat based off these recent specials because it is trendy.

Does Damon Wayans have anything in his stand up that can challenge any of Chappelle's greatest bits? Personal taste aside, the general consensus says "no". If you would like to challenge that, by posting some legendary Damon Wayans stand up bits that hold up well against Dave Chappelle's, I'm all ears.

I’ve been a fan of all phases of Dave’s career seeing as were nearly the same age. I like a good yarn with something to say over non stop dick jokes.

I'm guessing you're around 20 to 25 years old, because Dave was already on that pedestal(in stand up) long before the Netflix specials hit.

While he did GOAT level stand up, I’ve stopped considering Eddie Murphy a stand up comedian. 2 specials from the 80’s isn’t enough to be in the mix any more IMO.

Edit: And I’m coming from a total body of work point of view. It’s not enough for me no matter how good it was.

Not before the Chappelle show. His standup alone wasn't as heralded, at least not amongst black people, like Aries Spears said.

White people always fucked with Dave Chapelle. "The hood" and "black culture" didn't embrace him as much until the Chappelle show.

Not being racist at all. It is just my observation as a black person born and raised in an urban hood environment. I'm 33 btw. Young but not that young.

But then again "the hood" and certainly pop culture didn't widely know Patrice O'neal but I always found his stand up bits to be infinitely funnier than Chappelle's.

I assumed that they would just do a live set. But talent wise and overall comedic body of work, I feel that Damon is on the same level.

I would say there is definitely a style difference between a Chapelle special and the first Kings of Comedy show.

Actually it was funny but he says at the beginning it is his last NF special so he is kind of going over them.

Facts are facts. On Rotten Tomatoes it has 43% critics and 96% audience.
He didn't get overly defensive...he went at trans pretty fucking hard.

It was much different than sticks and stones

"the exact same material as his previous two specials" ???? making fun of white people? telling funny stories about racism??? oh wait, he has been doing that for fucking ever.
You are just upset he makes fun of the trans people.....which it is right for him to do. They don't give a fuck about making fun of white people or black people or etc....but OMFG if you make a joke at them they want to cancel you.

DC is exactly right making fun of them until they learn how to take a fucking joke.
Like those two fat ladies that may or may not be women I posted a pic of here. Those two were laughing it the fuck up until he made a trans joke.

I get it. People are sheep. People are suckers for propaganda. You hear all the time it is not right to make fun of trans or gay people then you get mad when comics do.

Also, Key and

Try again bro. You made a lot of ASSumptions. Notice I did not criticize the content. I don't even think he said anything all that controversial or offensive hence why I said the outrage was overrated as well.

In fact I didnt laugh out loud until he talked about using the restroom with a trans person. That is when it started to be funny. Before that it was meh.

But you just made a thread calling him overrated. Ok.

If we're talking standup only, Rock>>Chapelle, and it's not close. Let alone Mt Rushmore types like Carlin.

You are talking about people long retired and dead. Comedy is shit right now. DC is the best right now.

I think hes one of the GOATs but he hasn't been the same since the hiatus. "Killing Them softly" and ''For What It's Worth were great"
