Dave Chapelle's Standup Comedy is Ridiculously Overrated

Actually it was funny but he says at the beginning it is his last NF special so he is kind of going over them.

Facts are facts. On Rotten Tomatoes it has 43% critics and 96% audience.
He didn't get overly defensive...he went at trans pretty fucking hard.

It was much different than sticks and stones

"the exact same material as his previous two specials" ???? making fun of white people? telling funny stories about racism??? oh wait, he has been doing that for fucking ever.
You are just upset he makes fun of the trans people.....which it is right for him to do. They don't give a fuck about making fun of white people or black people or etc....but OMFG if you make a joke at them they want to cancel you.

DC is exactly right making fun of them until they learn how to take a fucking joke.
Like those two fat ladies that may or may not be women I posted a pic of here. Those two were laughing it the fuck up until he made a trans joke.

I get it. People are sheep. People are suckers for propaganda. You hear all the time it is not right to make fun of trans or gay people then you get mad when comics do.

But you just made a thread calling him overrated. Ok.

You are talking about people long retired and dead. Comedy is shit right now. DC is the best right now.

Is that all Dave has to say? Its boring to cover the same material over and over. I don't know if you pay attention to other comedians but they generally don't spend most of their specials responding to criticism from the last special. Is race and LGBT issues all Dave has to say about the world? Like I said, it's the weakest of the Netflix specials. That's not to say it's bad, just not as good and rather preachy with less humor. The last one has a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

I'm not even sure he is top 5 amongst black comedians alone,
<PlusJuan>

*edit* I replied directly to your op but I see you had these names on your mind too. great call TS

Redd Foxx
Dick Gregory
Richard Pryor
Eddie Murphy
Bernie Mac
Robin Harris
Patrice ONeal

but Chappelle is up there with them. Never gonna catch Pryor for me but the rest could be in his sights. Lets see how he rolls past his 50s into his 60s

Yes I think his stand up is overrated. How does that say I found the content offensive???? People like you have a reading comprehension problem.

It just wasn't extremely funny for the most part. I have felt more joy watching other legendary comics do stand up. From a social commentary standpoint, it was solid, comedicaly it was just ok. Excuse me for not being a parroting sheep like you. I think it is ridiculous, disingenuous, and lazy to say he is the GOAT and dismiss the work of everyone else. It's like, "this person said it so i'll say the same thing".

Said the same thing in the earlier thread, he stopped being funny after Trump. Got too political and bitter, and in live with himself thinking he's this philosopher or wise guru.

For some reason people seem to assume that anyone that says this is a right wing trump supporter. Well I'm not, just hate everyone having to insert politics into everything now.

Also, the accusation that K&P stole from him is absurd. They're just black dudes that also had a (pretty mediocre) sketch comedy show.

he is great. lately he is entering the George Carlin stage, where his comedy is mostly social discourse, or more exact - social critique, and a very good one at that. it's the natural progression of comics since the world started (look at what the ancient greek comedy was really about), but few make it up there.
is it funnier that eddie murphy? no. is it funnier than his earlier self? no.
is it more meaningful? absolutely.
he's in a very rarefied space now. very few comedians make it there, to be transcendent over culture. that's why he is uncancellable. it's like trying to cancel oxygen.

He was better before he went to Africa and became woke

This special really showed the difference between George Carlin and Dave Chappelle to me. Dave is very limited in his topics. This special seemed to revolve entirely around the black experience, LGBTQ issues, and responding to his woke critics. Carlin would cover three times the amount of topics in the same amount of time and throw in some crude irreverant jokes along the way. Has Dave ever spoken once about U.S. foreign policy? Does he have any thoughts about it? It's kind of important these days if you're going to make social commentary your thing. I gotta be honest, he doesn't seem to have any social criticism beyond LGBTQ and race.

agree up to a point. it's obvious Carlin has a way larger area of social commentary, but if you remember the Chappelle show, he did do foreign politics a bit, granted through a "black experience" lens. Carlin used to do society and world in general, while dave does a lot more "what happened in the last year" commentary, and most of the stuff that happened was, as it lately always is in america, about identity and race. i don't think the american public gives a shit about anything related to things happening outside of america anymore, if they ever did. it would be a monologue in silence with most people in the audience not understanding a damn thing he is reffering to, therefore missing all the jokes.

This might be the most accurate post I've seen on this board.

I wish that earlier Chappelle would come back and that the comedians of today were brave enough to tackle the subject. The past 20 years of U.S. foreign policy are arguably the worst in American history with our country having done more harm to the world than Russia or China combined in that same time period. I can't think of a previous time when that was the case.

Dam @GoshiShun17 you're getting your ASS handed to you.

I'll add that making shit up because you're butthurt make you a slob.

See what I did there?

Bye :)

Think he's ok. He sounded like a tool with his emotional George Floyd bit at the start of his last one

At least IMO. They are simply not that laugh out loud funny for most of the shows. People calling him the GOAT has me exremely confused? Most of these people have to be sheep who really don't follow comedy.

His funniest work for me is the Chapelle show, I enjoyed it just as much as anyone. His movies were never widely succesful. His standup is just ok. Also the so called outrage is overstated as well as the outrage over the outrage.

Taking his total body of work into account, I'm not even sure he is top 5 amongst black comedians alone, let alone all comedians of all races.

Just had to get that thought out.

*PS* Key & Peele DID NOT "steal" his show. People have been doing sketch comedy forever. I don't get where that narrative comes from. In fact those two were on TV doing sketches before Dave.
Facts. People are still hyping him for the chapelle Show.
When i watched some stand up from him a couple years ago i Was shocked to see him turned into a bitter, not that smart, uncharismatic and unfunny, preaching smoker.

Going on Tour with Rogan of all people just proves that further.

Dave Chapelle;
Funny as hell? Check
Speak the truth? Check
GOAT? Check

Peace bitch. Thanx for contributing absolutely nothing. Don't forget to take your butt buddy @Tentacle Grape with you. You guys can dream together about sucking Dave's dick. Then come back when you have something relevant to say.

Sorry, he ain't the GOAT. Never said he was trash. Chappelle Show>>>>>>any of his standup specials.

@Vegeta stop making this about the LGBT community. From what I can see, many of them are in support of Dave anyway. But all that is irrelevant to how funny or not the show was, for me.

Taking the social commentary route just ain't the statement that it was when Carlin and Hicks did it. It's par for the course these days. Every dipshit and his dog has an opinion they'd love to bludgeon you with.

Baby on the corner and masturbating bus hijacker was peak Dave Chappelle.
