Dave Chapelle's Standup Comedy is Ridiculously Overrated

eddie Murphy and chappelle are tied for one but chappelle is more prolific as a stand up. Murphy basically just came out with two specials chappelle has at least 4 solid specials.

His new special sucks compared to the others. The last one with the Jessie smollet story was hilarious. Sandwiches?!?!!

I think he is one of the great comedic minds of our time. But his standup was never as great as some say. I'd say laugh for laugh Burr and CK have him beat. However, they've never made anything as great as Chapelle Show. And DC had more of my respect for never backing down for telling a joke and in fact, doubling down, in this current climate we need someone like him tbh.

Also, I randomly threw on Chapelle Show last night. I expected to see a few warm up episodes were everything was a little awkward and not as funny. Then outta the gate Clayton Bigsby is the last sketch of the first episode. He was hitting home runs outta the gate, it's madness.

Taking the social commentary route just ain't the statement that it was when Carlin and Hicks did it. It's par for the course these days. Every dipshit and his dog has an opinion they'd love to bludgeon you with.

Baby on the corner and masturbating bus hijacker was peak Dave Chappelle.

And in Hicks' case, his social commentary was performed in a very brash way, and often to an audience who was diametrically opposed to him idealogically. Basically, he was a condescending, unapologetic liberal, who preached to rednecks about how it inconvenienced him to live in a world with ignorant rednecks. And still got laughs.

He’s similar to Carlin now, where he uses his old funny delivery and storytelling to do social commentary. It’s still funny, especially when you’re still pointing out the actual absurdity of something that most people either don’t notice or are afraid to call out themselves. It’s still funny, because even once you realized Dave didn’t tell that many actual jokes you still think it’s funny. Just like when you realize Carlin was an old man ranting about politics and culture, it was still funny.

Comedy is subjective. I like DC but his stand up is slightly boring to me. I love Rogans podcast, hate his comedy. I hate his friends too--besides Burt. I think Nikki Glaser is funny in stand up but hate her podcast.

My Standup Mt Rushmore, Dave aint on it:
Murphy
Pryor
Rock
Dangerfield
Carlin

So where does Eddie Murphy rank? I've heard joe Rogan day he's royalty when it comes to comedy. Is this true?
Depends on who you ask and what they value. Some people don't rank Murphy that high because other guys have a lot more material.

If you're talking overall comedic ability Eddie is a GOAT, but I understand why people don't have him as a stand up goat with only two specials.

I only say this because he's funny in everything he does , movies , stand up, improv etc.. most comedians can't do it all.

Thats why I was saying it depends on what the topic is. He doesn't have enough material to really be a goat stand up, but that's because he was doing other things like making a BUNCH of great movies. As a comedic actor he's one of the goats in a great era.

But just talking stand up other guys have a better body of work. Like how can you put Murphy over say Chris Rock purely on stand-up? Hard to do, but Rock doesn't have great movies like Murphy.

The baby on the corner at 2am bit from Killin Them Softly is among the best stand up bits of all time.
I remember that from back in the day. Hilarious. It resonated with me especially strongly too because in high school, one of my friends lived on a really bad block in Detroit. I used to drive him home every once in awhile. One of those times (or maybe every time and my memory has condensed things into a single episode), there was a baby in a diaper standing in the middle of his street. I stopped, the baby stared at my car, and then from the nearest house we heard “GET YO’ ASS OUT THE STREET.”

hilarious but kind of heart wrenching.

At least IMO. They are simply not that laugh out loud funny for most of the shows. People calling him the GOAT has me exremely confused? Most of these people have to be sheep who really don't follow comedy.

His funniest work for me is the Chapelle show, I enjoyed it just as much as anyone. His movies were never widely succesful. His standup is just ok. Also the so called outrage is overstated as well as the outrage over the outrage.

Taking his total body of work into account, I'm not even sure he is top 5 amongst black comedians alone, let alone all comedians of all races.

Agree with most of this.

Definitely nowhere near the GOAT of stand up. However, his movies were good and Chappelle's Show could actually be the GOAT sketch comedy show. Absolutely brilliant.

So taking everything into account, I'd put him as one of the top comedians overall. Top 5 probably.

I lost Stand Up guys like this

1. Eddie Griffen.
2. Chris Rock.
3. Bill Cosby.
4. Eddie Murphy.
5. Martin Lawrence.
6. Dave Chappelle.
7. Andrew Dice Clay.
8. Bernie Mac.
9. Robin Harrison.
10. whoopie Goldberg

Eddie has two GOAT-level stand up specials but that's not enough volume for an entire career.

But he's also got the arguably greatest comedy movie career of all. Overall, I'd have him as #1.
